    Accommodation Situation in Siegen

    General Information

German universities usually do not have campus systems as in some other countries where students can find housing directly on university property. Therefore students must find room on their own. As in other German citiess that host universities, it is hard to find accommodation in Siegen.

As a rule, the accommodation situation in Siegen is especially difficult at the beginning of the winter semester in October and November. The most important prerequisite for finding a room is patience.
Should you not initially find the ideal solution, you should accept the most reasonable offer and keep looking around for something better in the next month.

Rooms in private accommodation can cost €250 on average. Rooms in student residences cost between €160 and €312.

    Student Residences

At the beginning of every semester there is just a limited number of student dormitories available. To get access to one of these, we strongly recommend to apply for accommodation as soon as possible, best before July 31st /January 31st. The Studentenwerk and the AWO-Wohnheim in Bürbach both offer application forms on their websites.
Please note: The following addresses are available to all students. As with all kinds of student housing, a timely written application is absolutely necessary. The waiting period can be quite long, e.g. at least one semester for the Studentenwerk.

    Private Accomodation

Students who do not want or do not get accommodation in student dormitories are advised to arrive in Siegen well before the start of their course of studies in order to look for private accommodation. Many students organize flat-sharing communities ("Wohngemeinschaften" or "WGs"). Some rooms in WGs and small appartments are adverticed on public notice boards, a collection of room offers is also accessible to all students in the office of the AStA .
The AAA cannot help you look for accommodation but we try to give you some useful advice for your search (please read below)

    How to read Accommodation Offers

In Germany you can rent empty, partially furnished (“teilmöbliert”) and furnished rooms (“möbliert”). Empty flats are really empty: there is no furniture and fitments. Partly furnished and furnished accommodation has at least some furniture, sometimes even some kitchen furniture and fitments. However, flats are seldom rented furnished, whereas private rooms and student residences are.
Note: Some flats advertised by estate agents in newspapers will cost a fee of up to two months rent extra.
If telephone numbers are given in a classified advertisement you can call the landlord or estate agent directly. You should call as early as possible (from 7.00 a.m.) to arrange a viewing appointment.
Most landlords expect the tenant to pay a deposit of one or two months rent. The deposit will be returned to you at the end of the stay on condition that you leave the accommodation in good order.
The rental prices advertised in newspapers are usually for the basic rent, i.e. costs for electricity, water heating and refuse removal are extra.
On the contrary, extra costs are often included in the price of furnished rooms. Look out for “Warmmiete” (heating costs included), “komplett” (all extra costs included) and “Kaltmiete” (extra costs not included).
Do not forget to ask for extra costs (“Nebenkosten”) when looking for accommodation.

Most of these websites admit their users a free placement of personal ads.

    Accommodation Offers in Newspapers

Locating apartments or private room offers through the newspaper is another option. Accommodation offers will appear frequently in the following newspapers:

    Siegener Zeitung: on Saturdays

    Westfälische Rundschau: on Saturdays
    www.westfaelische-rundschau.de

    Westfalenpost: on Saturdays

If possible, it is the best to buy the paper the previous evening and to phone advertisers immediately.

    Notice boards (“Schwarze Bretter”)

Private notices (small advertisements) from people offering or looking for accommodation can be found in all parts of the university buildings. There are many notice boards in the buildings Hölderlinstraße (H), Paul-Bonatz-Straße (PB) und Adolf-Reichwein-Straße (AR).
Especially free room in flat-sharing communities can be found there.
