    Useful Information

    Money and Banking

Opening a bank account is the best and easiest way to handle your finances. All financial transfers in Germany (e.g. rent, telephone bill) are normally done directly via bank account transfer.
Most banks offer a free account for students till the age of 30.
The bank card gives you 24 hours-access to money withdrawal. Traveller cheques from your home country can be cashed in without any problems.

    Travel Health Insurance

Since German student health insurance only covers the period after university registration, i.e. not before 1st of October/1st of April respectively, we recommend that incoming students take out a travel health insurance for the period between arrival and registration.

    Health Insurance

In Germany, all students are legally required to have health insurance. Applicants without a health insurance with unlimited coverage will not be allowed to register at any German university.

EU citizens can be exempted from the obligatory health insurance if they can prove by means of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the forms E111 or E128 that they are unlimitedly covered by their health insurance in their home country. Upon arrival in Germany, this form or the card must be taken to a German health insurance company which then issues the student with a certificate of exemption. This certificate is necessary for the registration in the AAA.

Students who cannot be exempted need to arrange health insurance, either with a public health insurance company (e.g. the "AOK" or any other “Krankenkasse”) or with a private health insurance company. Until students reach their 15th semester or their 30th birthday, whichever comes first, the monthly rates for students in a public health insurance are approx. € 55,-/month.
For further information on the German health insurance system, the costs and regulations can be found here .

    Personal Liability Insurance ("Haftpflichtversicherung")

Students are recommended to take out a personal liability insurance after arrival. This insurance covers cases in which the property of a third party is damaged or a third person injured (e.g. from a biking accident or as a pedestrian). This type of insurance can be arranged in Germany or from your home country.
