Dr. John Postill ist Medienethnologe und Senior Lecturer in Media an der Sheffield Hallam University, zugleich Fellow of the Digital Anthropology Programme am University College London (UCL). Derzeit ist er am Internet Interdisciplinary Institute an der Open University Catalonia assoziiert und führt Feldforschungen zur Nutzung sozialer Medien bei sozialen Bewegungen in Barcelona durch.
Postill hat zuvor vor allem zur Rolle von Medien in Malaysia (PhD) gearbeitet sowie theoretische und methodologische Diskussionen über die Rolle von Medien und IKT sowie die Nutzbarkeit von praxeologischen Ansätzen für die Medienethnologie angestoßen. Zudem ist er Sprecher des Media Anthropology Networks in der EASA.
