International Workshop: Linguistic Perspectives on the Mediatisation of Sport

Topic

The Mediatisation of Sport: Linguistic perspectives on media communication in national and international amateur and professional sports

Date

June 13-14, 2017

Location

University of Siegen
Adolf-Reichwein-Str. 2
57068 Siegen
Germany

Description

The mediatisation of social sectors such as sport is a process which is a highly relevant and current topic for interdisciplinary research. Mediatisation is the transformation of social, cultural and institutional environments through traditional and new communication tools and technologies. Sport is seen as a prototypical example of such a mediatised social sector, because its media representation not only reflects, but also transforms language and communication at all levels from professional to amateur sports.
This workshop brings together researchers from sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and media linguistics who empirically investigate the impact and transformatory power of media technologies and media institutional demands on language and communicative processes in international sports communication. Contributions focus on aspects such as the use of new technologies in broadcasting and in the practice of sports, the linguistic representation of actions and actors in sports broadcasting, the linguistic and interactional analysis of new and transformed media formats and their culture-specific realisation as well as the linguistic appropriation of sport events by the media audience and the role of the media in shaping and enabling communicative participation of actors and audiences in sports events., The analyses presented use a variety of approaches such as discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, conversation analysis and systemic functional linguistics. The workshop gives ample opportunity for discussion and researchers as well as practitioners in the field of sports communication are invited to attend the workshop to contribute to the exchange of ideas and experience across academic disciplines and professional domains.
