Application Procedure

All candidates applying to the dual PhD program are expected to present their documents and proposals to both universities. Applicants should follow these steps:

1st Step - Application procedure in Siegen

  • Prepare a research proposal (approx. 3000 words) including an expected time schedule. All proposals must have a thematic focus on "European and Global Studies".
  • Prepare additional application documents:
    • academic CV
    • certified copies of university degree certificates and transcripts (BA and MA)
    • copy of English proficiency test (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate)
    • depending on the discipline, proof of language proficiency in an additional foreign language may be requested
Application Deadlines:
  • May 15 for candidates planning to start in October
  • November 15 for those planning to start in April
  • After you have received an invitation by the programme selection committee, please write a formal request (link to draft of the application letter) to be accepted in the faculty’s list of doctoral candidates including information about the thesis title and the names of the supervisors. This letter is to be addressed to: Prof. Dr. Angela Schwarz (Head of Doctoral Commission, Faculty I)

2nd step - Application procedure in Lancaster

  • Complete the online application available at:
https://www.postgraduate.lancs.ac.uk/_layouts/UserAuthentication/CreateUser.aspx
  • Upload the requested application documents:
    • academic CV
    • certified copies university degree certificates and transcripts (BA and MA)
    • copy of English proficiency test (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate)
    • two academic references
  • All application documents will be submitted online.

Non-EU applicants are advised to apply as early as possible as entry clearance granting requires an acceptance letter and the process can take 6 to 8 weeks.

Furthermore, early applications are encouraged as the application for several forms of funding requires an acceptance letter from the university.
