Medicine-Campus Bonn-Siegen Has Started

"Rethinking medicine": With the first 25 students of the new Human Medicine Bonn-Siegen course of studies, the new Bonn-Siegen Medical Campus is also starting.

The project "Rethinking Medicine" has reached another milestone. In the winter semester 2018/2019, the first 25 students of the new Human Medicine Bonn-Siegen degree course began their studies at the University of Bonn. This marks the start of the new Medicine Campus Bonn-Siegen. The prospective physicians will complete their pre-clinical studies and their clinical-theoretical subjects in Bonn for the first six semesters. The subsequent clinical studies up to the 12th semester will take place at the University of Siegen and the Siegen clinics.

In March 2018, the Universities of Bonn and Siegen signed a cooperation agreement with the four Siegen partner clinics (DRK Children's Hospital, Diakonie in Südwestfalen, Kreisklinikum and Mariengesellschaft Siegen) for the establishment of the joint human medicine course in Bonn-Siegen. The new study offer is to contribute to improving the medical supply in the rural area. Research and teaching in the field of digital medicine play a key role in this. The project is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia. Up to 6.5 million euros are to be made available annually for this purpose.

Now the first 25 students are registered for the Medizin-Campus Bonn-Siegen, some of them even come from the district Siegen-Wittgenstein. The new course of studies will be carried out in Bonn and Siegen, closely based on the Bonn curriculum of human medicine, and will conclude with the state examination. The response was extraordinarily high. Approximately 2,500 applicants applied for the 25 places to be allocated.

On October 8, Prof. Dr. med. Bernd Weber, Vice Dean for Teaching and Studies at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn, welcomed the cohort of around 325 first-semester students of human medicine to the new anatomy of the University of Bonn. Right at the beginning, he pointed out that medicine was a privilege: "Studying is somewhat different from teaching at school. It requires a lot of self-motivation and also the acceptance to fail an exam once. Find friends among your fellow students who will go through their studies together with you. But I would also like to encourage you: Be critical, challenge us, be curious and use your possibilities." In order to strengthen the feeling of togetherness, the name of a scholar stands for every year of human medicine in Bonn. In 2018 Franz von Leydig, Professor of Comparative Anatomy and Zoology, was chosen. He taught at the University of Bonn from 1875 to 1887.

The students are now starting into their medical future. Especially in the first 4 semesters a lot of knowledge is waiting: From biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy, medical psychology and sociology to medical ethics. Contents and organization are optimized in continuous exchange between the Student Council of Medicine, consisting of students, and the Dean's Office.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Brück, Vice Dean for Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Siegen, presented the supplementary study program at the University of Siegen. In February 2019, a block course on digital medicine will be offered for the first time to students of the Medicine-Campus Bonn-Siegen in Siegen. The aim is to expand inter-professional communication between the disciplines of medicine and computer science in order to develop and optimize processes as well as the operation and logic of medical devices.
