International Optical Society of America (OSA) Conference on Laser Applications to Chemical, Security and Environmental Analysis (LACSEA 2016)

The Laser Applications to Chemical, Security, and Environmental Analysis (LACSEA) topical OSA meeting was focused on laser-based sensing in combustion or industrial process gases, gases that may contain chemical or biological agents and in atmospheric gases. Sensing of liquids (e.g., aerosols) and solids (e.g., particulates or explosives) are also discussed. This international meeting took place this summer in the Kongresshaus Stadthalle Heidelberg and one of the chairs organizing the scientific program was Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Seeger (University of Siegen). There were 95 conference contributions covering e.g. the rapid development of laser technologies as well as data analysis tools which are paving the way for novel monitoring schemes and even real-time control in various environments. The different topics covered the VUV to THz spectra range, and involved exciting new developments in analytical spectroscopy, ultrafast lasers, frequency combs, and miniaturization. Additionally creative ideas involving new laser technologies, methodologies, and/or data analysis tools were shown. Scientists from different countries all over the world used this conference also to discuss these new developments during coffee breaks or at the conference dinner which took place during a ship cruise on the river Neckar. Selected conference contributions based on this fifteenth OSA Topical meeting will be published in a feature issue of Applied Optics which is organized by Prof. Thomas Seeger as a chief guest editor. The ZESS was represented by a contribution about a new development of picosecond CARS spectroscopy for combustion diagnostics which was presented by Prof. Seeger (Chair of Engineering Thermodynamics, University of Siegen). Additionally this summer the Optical Society Board of Directors has designated Prof. Dr.-Ing Thomas Seeger as a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America because of his significant professional experience within the optics and photonics field.
