Master of Science

The Master of Economic Policy Siegen program is designed to prepare its students for the challenges which an increasingly globalizing economy imposes on businesses, economic policy and society. It endows its participants with the economic competence and analytical skills for a successful career in administration, government, national and international associations, and global business. To achieve this goal the MEPS program not only offers a profound training in economic theory and econometric techniques but also enables its students to independently analyze questions of practical and political relevance empirically.

The masters program has a strong international focus, it explicitly addresses an international audience and is therefore taught (apart from some non-obligatory courses) in English. It is a four-semester program beginning both in the winter (October). The academic faculty of the Department of Economics at the University of Siegen is not only very active and well-established in the national and international academic community, but is also highly committed and motivated to teach its students up-to-date economic knowledge in an accessible fashion.

The MEPS program consists of eight compulsory as well as two elective modules. Four of the compulsory modules are concerned with the acquisition of fundamental economic and econometric theories and techniques, whereas the other four modules have a more applied character and deal with various policy-relevant topics in economics. The two elective modules can be chosen from a total of six offered modules. Three of these modules provide a specialization in economic topics, whereas the remaining three modules cover various topics in business administration. One of the two selected elective modules needs to have an economic focus.

The MEPS program endows its studens with a sound knowledge in economics, econometrics and empirics, bringing them to the frontiers of current research. Furthermore, due to its quantitative orientation, it also trains the students‘ analytical and logical problem-solving skills and prepares them either for a successful (international) professional career and/or an academic career in high-level economic research. The MEPS program conveys a wide range of knowledge that opens up various job opportunities. Given the wide range of elective courses offered, graduates of the MEPS program have excellent job prospects for qualified positions in:

  • Ministries and government agencies (ministries of finance and economic affairs, economic forecasting agencies, competition authorities and central banks).
  • International organizations such as the IMF, World Bank, OECD, ECB as well as other European Community institutions.
  • Employer and employee organizations, consumer organizations and environmental organizations.
  • The private sector (especially in globally active companies).
  • Given the sound education in economic theory and econometric methods the MEPS program can also serve as a first step in an academic career.
