Master of Arts

„Roads to Democracy(ies)“ is a research-oriented, international and interdisciplinary Master’s programme. It is offered by the Departments of History, Political Science and Sociology at University of Siegen in cooperation with the Universities of Uppsala (Sweden) and Coimbra (Portugal).

The programme aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of and insights into the formation and development of democracies. The interdisciplinary curriculum focuses on political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of democratic ideas, institutions and structures both in and outside of Europe. Students shall develop a broad, comparative understanding of the mechanisms behind democratic transitions from a historical and social scientific perspective to acquire the competence to assess present-day democratic developments on a national and supranational level.

The language of instruction and examination is English. In the optional area students may attend courses instructed in German, Portuguese, Swedish and other languages.

The programme comprises:

  • An Introductory Module consisting of two joint blended e-learning courses “Democracy in Theory and Practice” and “Theory and Methods of History and Social Science”
  • Two out of four Thematic Modules:
    • TM 1 Democratisation, Political Cultures and Media; TM 2 Democratisation, Political Cultures and International Politics (Siegen);
    • TM 3 Democratisation and Globalisation (Coimbra);
    • TM 4 History, Democratisation and Welfare (Uppsala)
  • A Master Thesis Module comprising thesis forums and tutorials, the Master’s thesis and the Master’s thesis presentation
  • Optional elements including transferable skills and language courses, additional optional seminars and internships.

Student exchange is an important part of the study programme. Students of Roads to Democracy(ies) are therefore encouraged to spend an integrated study period abroad of one semester at one of the partner universities. The study period abroad has the aim to enhance the academic and personal exchange across borders and to provide the students with experience about new contents, research methods and approaches.

The Master of Arts Degree in the programme Roads to Democracy(ies) qualifies successful graduates to pursue a further academic qualification within doctoral studies/ PhD studies. The Master’s programme provides a good basis for responsible positions in, e.g.: international governmental and non-governmental organisations, national and international aid and development agencies, public and private research institutions and institutes of higher education, culture agencies and cultural heritage institutions, publishing agencies and media institutions focusing on international and intercultural issues, political parties, private associations, foundations, internationally operating companies.
