The department introduces itself
Civil engineers have traditionally devoted themselves primarily to the design and construction of buildings, bridges, dykes, canals and roads. Over the last few decades, they have developed the scientific foundations that now enable them to create large-scale structures such as high-rise buildings, dams, industrial plants, transportation structures and geotechnical structures. In addition to the technical challenges, civil engineers today are increasingly faced with construction and project management tasks. Civil engineering today also goes hand in hand with environmental planning to a large extent. The construction and use of hydroelectric and wind power plants, environmentally friendly building materials, the effects of climate change and forecasts on its development, flood forecasting and flood protection, waste and recycling management (including recycling) are just as important today as the construction, planning and management of buildings and other structures using digital software solutions.
