Arabic ranks 5th on the list of the most spoken languages in the world! There are more than 300 million native speakers across 22 countries, and almost 430 million people know it as a second or foreign language. As the language of the Quran Arabic is of special importance for more than 1.8 billion people. However, Arabic isn't just a very widespread language, but also a very beautiful language. Even though it is not so easy to learn, it is well worth it, as it will open the doors to a new world! The difficulty lies in the coexistence of Standard Arabic, which in its classic form only exists in writing, and many regional dialects, which are usually only used for verbal communication. With the textbook the Language Center uses we succeed in closing the gap between Standard Arabic and dialect. Students will learn reading and writing of the Arabic script as well as a modern Standard Arabic for verbal communication in everyday scenarios with insight into various dialects. Regional and cultural-religious knowledge, that help to better understand the Muslims living among us, will also be taught. Previous knowledge is not needed for participation, but isn't hindering either! In any case, the participation in the German-Arabic Tandem program is highly recommended.
