Federal Ministries

At the federal level, project-oriented research is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
In addition to basic research, the focus is here also on application-oriented research to enable the development of new ideas and technologies. The aim is to strengthen innovation.
In July 2010, the German Federal Government presented the "High-Tech Strategy 2020". It identifies specific needs in order to meet the global challenges. The defined task fields are:

  • Climate/Energy
  • Health/Nutrition
  • Security
  • Communication
  • Mobility of the Future

You will find current tenders under the funding announcements of the BMBF.

The electronic application system "easy" is used to submit project sketches and applications for funding. A guide and important information for the easy-online software can be found here..

Easy sample applications and information for applications to Federal Ministries can be found here.

For the University of Siegen you will find a tutorial with important information about the application process Ausfüllhilfe_easy-online. More experienced applicants will find the specific data for the University of Siegen in the file Ausfüllhilfe_easy.

The Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, BMWi, wants to strengthen innovation and competitiveness of medium-sized enterprises through the Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM).
In this program consumables or equipment cannot be applied for. These must be paid for from the staff overhead (75% based on the employee's gross wage costs in the year of the application). Of course, the difference between the employee's gross wage costs and the employer's costs must be covered first, including increases in tariffs and pay-grade changes. Afterwards, the overhead is at your disposal and its use is not controlled.

In this program, you will only receive employee wage costs at the level of the application year + overhead + subcontracts. Maximum funding is € 190,000 and higher education institutions may have a maximum of 50% of the working months in the overall project. Subcontracts may not exceed 25% of the cost of labor.

Please do not forget to verify the cooperation agreement at an early stage. It must be included in the draft (but may not be signed under any circumstances)!

You can find important information on the application form in the Ausfüllhilfe_ZIM.
