The degree program
The Master's degree program in "Applied Linguistics: Language and Communication in Professional Life" (KFB) is to enable students who have acquired specialist scientific and language-practical competences in a linguistic Bachelor's degree program or an equivalent degree program to give foreign language lessons or training on oral and written business communication for adults on a scientific basis: both in the area of professional further training and in the general area.
Additionally, the degree program prepares for responsible activities for language and communication experts in language schools/language centres, in creation of teaching media, facilities of professional further training, HR and in corporate communication and publicity work.
The Master's degree program is offered with two content specialization areas:
- Professional communication (PK)
- Foreign languages in adult education (FidE)
Depending on the specialization direction and sensible overlaps between the two specializations, the degree program comprises the following subject areas:
- Theory and analysis of speech communication
- Communication on the job
- Learning and teaching foreign languages
- Intercultural communication and multiple languages
- Methods of empirical research
- Language practice
- Basic knowledge of business administration
Specific study elements are studied in light of a focus language to be selected.
Language focuses available for the M.A. Applied Linguistics are:
- English
- French
- Spanish
- German/ German as a foreign language
The program can be studied in the research-oriented study model/major combination.
Admission requirements
1) Completed studies in a bachelor's degree
program of a relevant subject with a linguistic focus
or
2) Completed studies of an equivalent degree
program
(in particular teacher's studies with a regular study time of
at least six semesters and equivalent foreign courses of
study).
The examination regulations relevant at the time shall
apply.
Important information
Languages
In any case, very good knowledge in the chosen linguistic focus is required (level C1 of the common European reference framework). In case of Spanish as linguistic focus, admission is possible with Spanish skills on level B2; level C1 must be proven at the latest when signing up for the Master's thesis in this case.
Furthermore, all applicants must document English skills on level B2.
Internship
Students complete either a minimum eight-week internship or a module from the Studium Generale (interfaculty lectures on general subjects).
However, the internship is strongly recommended.
Study organization
Examination regulations/degree plan/module
manuals/internship rules
Examination regulations (POs) specify the basic structures of a
degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to be
studied). Students are automatically subject to the current
version of their PO when they matriculate for their first
subject-related semester. This means that even if the PO
changes during their studies, the original version according to
which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the PO
does not expire).
The respective degree plan is the recommended example progress
of the studies in individual subjects and is part of a PO.
Supplementary provisions and details for any module to be
studied can be found in the module manually (e.g. requirements
for taking a written test or content-related information on the
modules/events, ...).
The internship rules define the conditions under which the
required or optional internships must be completed.
We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your
degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that
you know which modules are intended for the start of your
studies.
