Start of DREAMS

October 1st, 2013 DREAMS was started

The new FP7-ICT integrated project DREAMS (Distributed REal-Time Architecture for Mixed Criticality Systems) aims at developing a cross-domain architecture and design tools for networked complex systems where application subsystems of different criticality, executing on networked multi-core chips, are supported.

In many domains such as avionics, industrial control, or healthcare there is an increasing trend for integrating functions with different certification assurance levels using a shared computing platform. For example, healthcare systems encompass monitoring functions for observing the patient’s vital signs at home or at a point of care to clinicians. These services are vital for treatment and a critical aspect of the patient’s safety needs, while they can be combined with less critical applications such as multimedia and entertainment.

Starting October 1st 2013, DREAMS will leverage multi-core technology for a hierarchical distributed platform for mixed-criticality applications combining the chip- and cluster-levels. This system perspective will be established by virtualization, platform models and tools and integrated resource management resulting in higher flexibility, adaptability and energy efficiency. The virtualization technologies for shared resources will ensure that non-critical functions can never corrupt critical functions on the same platform.

The expected gains from DREAMS project are numerous. The most important will be a significant reduction of development lifecycle and certification efforts. The impact further includes a reduction of time-to-market, decreased development, deployment and maintenance cost, and the exploitation of the economies of scale through cross-domain components and tools. The architecture will be cross-domain in nature and support multiple domains (e.g., avionic, industrial, and healthcare). Furthermore, DREAMS will lead to improved system characteristics (e.g., reliability, safety, security, resource efficiency, adaptability).

Based on the strong foundation in European and national initiatives, DREAMS will establish a European reference architecture for mixed-criticality systems by consolidating and extending existing platform technologies and development methods. The project will actively contribute to community building and standardization to facilitate industrial harmonization and uptake of results.

The ambitious goals of the project are supported by 16 project partners distributed across six European countries. The project partners include major European companies encompassing large enterprises (Alstom, STMicroelectronics, Thales, TÜV Rheinland) and SMEs (FENTISS, RealTime-at-Work, TTTech, Virtual Open Systems,). Furthermore leading universities and research institutes (FORTISS, IKERLAN, ONERA, Polytechnic University of Valencia, SINTEF, Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Technical University of Kaiserslautern and University of Siegen) contribute to DREAMS.

The four-years DREAMS project is coordinated by University of Siegen and is one of three projects funded by the European Commission in the area of mixed-criticality systems from the FP7 ICT call 10. The EC financial contribution amounts to 11 million euros.
