|
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Siegen mourns the loss of its colleague Ulrich Koschorke, who died on October 28, 2024 at the age of 83. Ulrich Koschorke was born on February 1, 1941 in Königsberg. From 1960 to 1968 studied at the universities of Bonn and Berlin, at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Brandeis University in the USA. In 1968 he received his doctorate under Richard Palais at Brandeis University. From 1968 to 1977 he was Assistant Professor and visiting professor at Rutgers University (USA) and in Bonn. In 1977 he was appointed full professor at the University of Siegen. Until his retirement in 2006, he taught a wide range of subjects here: in addition to lectures in the field of topology and pure mathematics, this included mathematics for electrical engineers and higher mathematics for mechanical engineers. Ulrich Koschorke made important contributions to the field of topology long after his retirement. These include over 50 publications, the organization of five international conferences at the University of Siegen, other conferences and the co-editorship of the Journal of Fixed Point Theory and its Applications. Also through numerous research stays - including in England, France, Brazil, North America and the USSR - he was also present for the international research community. He supervised 9 doctorates in Siegen. In his private life, Ulrich Koschorke was very interested in the ethnology of the Central Asian peoples, and he organized several exhibitions in this field. Ulrich Koschorke is survived by his wife, two children and four grandchildren. Uwe Kaiser
