Childcare

Vacation Childcare at the University of Siegen

In order to improve the compatibility of work or study and family, the University of Siegen has been offering vacation childcare for the children of students and employees since the summer semester 2008.
During the Easter, summer and fall vacations, school children between the ages of 6 and 14 can be cared for on a weekly or daily basis from Monday to Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or half-day until 1:30 p.m. The program will include many varied, age-appropriate, creative and exciting activities.
Further information and registration forms can be found on the vacation care homepage.

Kita (daycare) Student Services Organization

The Studierendenwerk is the sponsor of the daycare center, which is located on the Haardter Berg in the immediate vicinity of the university. There are a total of 70 places available for children aged 4 months to school age.
All further information can be found on the website of the KiTa Student Services Organization.

Flexi

The flexible childcare offer "FLEXI" is aimed at all parents of the university and the Student Services Organization with children aged 6 months to 10 years who need hourly and flexible childcare.
FLEXI is located right next to the Student Services Organization's daycare center on the Adolf Reichwein Campus. The children are cared for there by pedagogical staff.
Further information and registration forms can be found on the Flexi homepage.

Parents' initiative Krabbelstube (day nursery)

The Krabbelstube is an independent initiative of student parents that uses a self-designed room for childcare in the Adolf Reichwein Building: AR-C 3001.
Childcare is free of charge, provided that care is provided by the parents themselves. The care times are adapted very flexibly to the individual needs of the parents. Thus, care during semester breaks or on weekends is also possible.

Finding childcare

For short-term or even regular child care occasions, Parent and Family Services assists in finding child care providers to care for children both at home and on University premises. Care is provided through a private agreement between the parents and the caregiver and is paid for privately.
If you are in need of appropriate care, check our online child care registry and contact Parent and Family Services.

Childcare fund for employees

The care fund can be used by employees in science (except W2 and W3 professorships), in technology and administration, as well as SHKs and WHBs. The childcare fund is intended to provide support to balancing work and family life when additional care is required in connection with official matters. Employees with child(ren) or dependents in need of care can therefore receive a subsidy for care costs upon application.
The entire application process takes place through Parent and Family Services. Certain criteria must be complied with when claiming the care fund.
You can find all the necessary information on the information sheet on the care fund.
You will also need the application form and proof of care.

Subsidies for travelling expenses for the necessary transport of child(ren) and an accompanying person on business trips

As a family-friendly university, the University of Siegen supports the taking along of children and, if applicable, a necessary accompanying person, if they cannot be cared for at the place of residence. All employees of the University of Siegen with child(ren) (under 12 years of age) can apply for a pro-rated travel grant for family travel.
The entire application process takes place through Parent and Family Services. When claiming this support, the implementing regulations must be complied with (see information sheet).
All necessary information can be found on the information sheet. You will also need the application form and possibly other evidence.

Childcare in the region

In addition to university childcare options, there are also a variety of childcare options in the region. Depending on the family's place of residence, you may have to resort to childcare services offered by the city of Siegen or the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein.
Legal entitlement and parental contributions
Every child has a legal right to a place in a daycare center from the age of 3 until the age of school entry, and to a place in daycare or in a daycare facility from the age of 1.
The Kita year always begins on August 1 of a year, which determines the time of admission. Admission during the current Kita year is only possible if there is free capacity.
Places are usually allocated in January/February for the same year.                                                                                     You can find information about childcare services in the region here:

Childcare City of Siegen
Childcare District of Siegen-Wittgenstein

School attendance

Compulsory school attendance

In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, school attendance is compulsory. It begins on August 1 of the same year for children who reach the age of 6 by September 30 of that year.
Compulsory schooling is divided into full-time compulsory schooling and subsequent compulsory schooling at the upper secondary level.

School choice

Elementary school:
Parents may enroll their children in the elementary school of their choice, but enrollment entitlement merely encompasses the elementary school closest to their place of residence.
In the case of secondary schools, parental choice applies within the limits of available capacity. However, the pupils receive a school-type recommendation with their half-year report in the 4th grade at the elementary school.

Registration

Registration takes place directly at the respective school. The school's website usually lists the registration times, as does the City of Siegen's website in the Schools section.
Elementary school registration:
The City of Siegen sends out invitations for registration at the nearest elementary school. Each child may only be registered at one elementary school.
