Hans Bender – Parapsychology at the crossroads of scientific research, social inquiry, and public media (ca. 1945-1975)

Director: Prof. Dr. Sylvia Paletschek
Researcher: Dr. Anna Lux

The aim of this project is to analyse the interaction of scientific research, social inquiry and public media in the academic work of Hans Bender (1907-1991), who was the most important researcher in parapsychology in the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 1951 he acted for the Chair for Psychologie and Pedagogy at the University of Freiburg/Breisgau (between 1967 and 1975 as a full professor) and directed the Institute for the Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health (IGPP), which he founded in 1950. In considering Bender's work, this project will devote particular attention to the relations among science, society and media. An inquiry into his life and work will cast light upon wider questions of the history of science, university history and social history, such as: How and when was research in parapsychology established as an academic discipline (nationally and internationally)? What kind of innovative questions or methods were broached within this marginal academic field? How did the University of Freiburg and the broader academic community respond to the public excitement over this research in occult phenomena? Finally, what role did the media play within his work and the development of this field?
