Recreational, sports and cultural life

apollo_stadt_siegen.jpgSiegen-Wittgenstein offers multi-faceted and attractive recreational activities and a vibrant cultural life. South Westphalia's and Wittgenstein's low mountain ranges including the "Rothaargebirge" natural park and the headwaters of Eder, Lahn and Sieg provide an ideal setting for hiking and experiencing true nature. At the surrounding ski resorts, there is ample winter sports enjoyment for the whole family as well as a broad selection of summer attractions.

Art and culture play a major role in our region.Siegen prides itself on being the birthplace of Peter Paul Rubens, one of the most important Flemish Baroque painters of the 17th century, who was born here in exile in 1577. Some of his paintings can be seen in Siegen (at the Siegerland museum in Upper Castle). If you prefer modern art, the Museum of Contemporary Art is the obvious choice. In 2008, the Apollo Theatre was inaugurated and offers audiences of all ages a sophisticated mix of stage plays, guest performances, concerts and shows. The media and culture house Lÿz is the home of cabaret, while the multi-functional Siegerlandhalle offers room for large-scale concerts ranging from classical music to rock. With Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Siegen-Wittgenstein has its own renowned symphony orchestra. Finally, KulturPur is Germany's largest open air music festival, which is organized in a tented city in the countryside near Siegen.

For the students and employees of University of Siegen, University Sports has put together a varied programme. Each year the campus runs a broad range of classes in everything from Aikido to Zumba.

Our Department of Arts organizes exhibitions in local galleries and our Department of Music offers a varied music programme, thus contributing to the diversity of cultural life. In a co-production with Siegen's Apollo Theatre, the Music Department of University of Siegen staged Siegen's first opera production in 2010.
