Darya Mozhayeva Receives Young Scientist Award

PhD student Darya Mozhayeva from the Department of Chemistry and Biology at the University of Siegen has been awarded the DAAS Prize of the German Chemical Society (GDCh).

(9 July 2019) The DAAS Prize is awarded only every two years to young scientists in the field of chemical micro- and trace analysis by the German Working Group for Analytical Spectroscopy at the GDCh. This year, the 1500 Euro award goes to Darya Mozhayeva from the Department of Chemistry and Biology at the University of Siegen. The doctoral student is honored for the development of improved nanoparticle detection methods. "Ms. Mozhayeva is one of the best international students I have met in Siegen, and I am very pleased that her doctoral thesis has received national attention," said her supervisor Prof. Carsten Engelhard.

Without the support through a scholarship of the House of Young Talents of the University of Siegen and later through the BMBF project „FENOMENO“, the work could not have been done. "We are delighted that Mrs. Mozhayeva, a scholarship recipient from our first cohort, has won this prestigious prize. We were already convinced of her scientific performance when we made the selection decision for the fellowship," said Dr. Daniel Müller, head of the House of Young Talents.

Darya Mozhayeva was born in Kazakhstan and successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry at al-Farabi Kazakh National University. In 2013 she moved to the University of Siegen. After completing her international Master's degree in Chemistry, she joined Prof. Carsten Engelhard's group as a PhD student in Analytical Chemistry. Her research is concerned with the development and application of mass spectrometric methods coupled to capillary electrophoresis for the separation and characterization of individual nanoparticles. The methods have already been used in the "FENOMENO" project to search for tiny nanoparticles in environmental samples..
