Review: Agentur Südwestfalen & Agentur für Arbeit (28.06.2019)

International breakfast

On Friday, the 28th of June, we had another international breakfast with guests from the Agentur Südwestfalen and the Agentur für Arbeit (Job Centre).

Agentur Südwestfalen

The Agentur Südwestfalen is a union of 5 district municipalities (Hochsauerland, Olpe, Siegen-Wittgenstein, Soest and Märkischer Kreis) and an association of currently 341 companies. Already for the second time, Ms Haardt-Cerff from the Agentur Südwestfalen presented to us the advantages of the region Südwestfalen:

  1. Number one industry region in North Rhine-Westphalia
  2. Over 150 international market leaders are located in this region
  3. Life in the countryside - but close to urban centres (Cologne, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf)
  4. Strong network between the 5 districts
  5. Strong in research and development
  6. High quality of life: work-life-balance
  7. Affordable housing
  8. Excellent educational facilities
  9. Secure environment and low unemployment rate
  10. A handshake counts (family owned businesses, flat hierarchies)

Besides, an opportunity for students to get practical experience is the Gap Year Südwestfalen. In this programme, you work in three different companies within one year (internship) to get to know German companies and the German working methods. The next Gap Year Südwestfalen starts on the 1st of April 2020. The application opens on the 15th of November 2019.

For more information check out the Agentur Südwestfalen website and our last review. You can also download the whole presentation

Agentur für Arbeit (Job Centre)

The Agentur für Arbeit offers helpful support for finding a job. Students can receive a first counselling. The agency offers two options:

1. "Arbeitssuchend" (looking for work)

Already during your studies, you can register as "arbeitssuchend" in order to receive information and advice on everything related to finding work. In addition, you will get:

  • individual support for your job search
  • an application check
  • BA-Media offer
  • good contacts to the regional job market
  • consulting

2. "Arbeitslos" (unemployed)

If you will be unemployed after your studies, you can register as "arbeitslos". You should make a consultation appointment at least three months in advance. You will get more support, but you are also obliged to follow the agency's directives (e.g. apply minimum 5 times per month ...).

To find out which option is best for you, please make an appointment at the job centre or write an email to hochschulteam.siegen@arbeitsagentur.de

In Germany, the language barrier often is the biggest hurdle to overcome in the process of finding a job. To get a job in Germany it is necessary to speak German, the Agentur für Arbeit recommends minimum level B2.

In addition, a survey found out that practical experience is more important than a very good degree in standard period of study. A good way to get hands-on experience is interning at a company (for example the Gap Year Südwestfalen).
