COVID-19

Stays Abroad in the Academic Year 2021/22

Federal Ministry of Health: Questions and answers on the digital vaccination certificate.

Will exchange programmes take place in the winter semester 2021/22?

Unfortunately, the developments of the COVID-19 expansion and its impact on our exchange programmes can only be estimated to a limited extent. At present, we assume that exchanges will take place at many partner universities in the winter semester 2021/22. Face-to-face teaching, online teaching or a mixture of both is possible. The majority of our partner universities in Europe are carrying out the application procedures as planned; major restrictions apply to applications for partner universities worldwide. Here, online programmes are the main option at the moment. If possible, exchanges at partner universities worldwide will be postponed until the coming summer semester.

Students affected will receive further information from us by e-mail.

I would like to start my exchange studies or traineeship abroad. How will the stay work?

Many universities have already published their decisions on semesters and exchanges in the winter semester 2021/22 and sent out information by email to participating students.
The semester offers vary depending on the location. In addition to face-to-face courses, online courses or a mixture of both are also possible.

Depending on the host institution, you can also start your stay online. If you are not travelling to your destination country and would like to take part in online courses at the host university in Germany, please contact your contact person abroad and enquire about possible requirements.
Funded Erasmus+ students and PROMOS students will receive more detailed information on funding for such a "virtual" stay by email.

If you have not yet received any information from your host university, or if you are unsure whether you want to take up the stay, we recommend that you wait and see. You can also postpone or cancel your stay at a later date.

Please remember to submit the compulsory documents required by us (e.g. Learning Agreement) and any documents required by the host university by the deadline and also take note of our information on travel planning.

What do I need to consider when planning my stay abroad in the winter semester 2021/22?

Once your application has been approved by our partner university, you will receive your letter of acceptance/letter of admission as well as further information on your next steps. Below you find additional tipps for your travel preparations:

Travel Preparations

» Visa and Entry Regulations
Check the Website Federal Foreign Office for updates on travel restrictions. Contact the embassy or consulate of your host country for information on current visa regulations as a late visa start date may delay your travel, move-in date, etc.

» Accommodation
Check terms and conditions particularly with regard to termination and reimbursement of rental payments and deposit, in case you need to cancel your stay due to COVID-19. If you are having difficulties finding appropriate information, contact your host university for help and support.

» Flights
Do not book a flight before you have received your letter of acceptance/letter of admission from your host university and make sure the airline allows you to rebook or cancel your flight free of charge. Currently a number of customers are still waiting for reimbursement of cancelled flights. Search for experience reports and check ratings of airlines and travel agencies.
The German consumer advice service Verbraucherzentrale provides information and tipps for travellers (in German only)

» Course Plan
Contact your host university for information about online course delivery and check with our partners if you will be allowed to complete your courses at home, in case face-to-face sessions have to be cancelled or you need to return to Germany.

If you feel uncertain and wish to defer your exchange, please inform us about your decision as soon as possible.

I would like to postpone my stay until the summer semester. What do I have to do?

Students who have received a place for the winter semester 2021/22 can postpone their stay to the summer semester. Please inform the host university abroad and also us about your decision.
Often, the admission abroad is also valid for the summer semester. In some cases, a second nomination and, if necessary, application abroad is necessary. In this case, students will receive further information from our partner universities or directly from us.

Please be sure to observe the semester and lecture times abroad! In Northern Europe and in many countries outside the EU, the summer semester begins earlier than in Germany! Be sure to consult with the contact persons at your faculty in order to plan and coordinate the winter semester in Germany and your semester abroad in the summer semester.

I do not wish to start or interrupt my stay in the winter semester.

You can withdraw from your stay or interrupt your stay at any time. In this case, please inform your host university and us immediately!
This decision has no effect on future stays abroad within the framework of our programmes. Should you wish to apply for an exchange in the academic year 2022/23, you can apply again in the winter semester 2021/22.

Can I apply for PROMOS funding in the current summer semester?

PROMOS grants are only advertised in the summer semester in the event of subsequent approval. Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to predict whether or when we will receive further funding.
