INVISIBLE BEINGS - Eighteenth-Century Literary Forms of the Self in Wheatley, Rowson, and Barbauld
Invisibility has long been a key motif in myth, religion, and literature, while today “not being seen” denotes a state of social marginalisation. This talk explores the cultural history of the invisible subject, tracing its modern origins in late eighteenth-century literature. Examining the invisible self in terms of gender, race, and religion, it discusses poems and prose by Phillis Wheatley, Susanna Rowson, and Anna Letitia Barbauld.
