Nicollas Cayann (Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil):
“DEPICTNESS - Colonial Imagery in Comics and Translation”
The Guest Lecture takes place on
Thursday, January 23, 2025
at 4.15 p.m.
in Room AR-D 6104
DEPICTNESS aims to analyse the ways in which PoC characters have been represented in the Tintin Collection. Utilising theoretical frameworks such as the traveller's eye and le voyageur immobile, the project seeks to analyse the writing of Hergé as travel literature. Furthermore, the project will comparatively analyse a selection of the translations of the serie to identify how the lines of black and PoC characters in petit nègre were translated through the perspective of eye dialect.
DEPICTNESS main goal is to amplify the discussion about racist depictions (visual or verbal) in mainstream cultural artefacts.
