Jaap Verweij Becomes Founding Dean
The University of Siegen has appointed Professor med. Jaap Verweij Founding Dean of the School of Life Sciences (LWF).
The project "Rethinking Medicine" is being implemented at the University of Siegen at the new School of Life Sciences (LWF). Pursuant to the Higher Education Act (§ 26 (6)), the Rectorate of the University of Siegen, in agreement with the Senate, has appointed Professor Dr. med. Jaap Verweij a founding dean. Prof. Verweij will initially run the office until the 31st of January 2018 for the period of foundation. He will be supported by Dr. Olaf Gaus in managerial capacity, who has been operating supervisor of the project for one year.

With him, the university wins a high-caliber specialist, with whom we can successfully establish a study program for medicine here in Siegen. Prof. Jaap Verweij has been Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Erasmus Medical Center (EMC) of the University of Rotterdam since 2013 and also Deputy Chairman of the Board. Prof. Verweij will remain with the EMC. For the start-up phase in Siegen his knowledge of the operating principles of a university hospital and the qualities in the management are of great value. The medical specialty of Prof. Verweij is oncology, as author or co-author, he has published more than 700 scientific publications. In addition to his activities in research, Prof. Verweij is involved in high-level committees, currently he has the deputy leadership of the Supervisory Board of the Netherlands Cancer Foundation. The Dutch national is married with three children.
Prof. Verweij will direct the development of medical education in Siegen. At the same time, Prof. Verweij will be working in an extended dean's office to network the various branches at the university, focusing on medical informatics, medical technology, public health with digital focus, medical science, psychology, economics and health the social sciences. Another central focus of his work as a founding dean is the connection to the four Siegen clinics in a joint work process in research, teaching and health care.
The Erasmus Medical Center (EMC) is a cooperation partner in the project "Rethinking Medicine", as are the University of Bonn and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The EMC is regularly ranked among the "Top 30" in global rankings and is closely networked internationally with all leading medical centers. In the field of medical teaching, the EMC has been awarded the "National Award", in the Netherlands for the fourth consecutive year. This award is granted on the basis of student votes.
