Siegen Economist Among the Top 100

Professor Thushyanthan Baskaran from the University of Siegen is among those German speaking economists, who are particularly strong in research. This is revealed by the current VWL ranking of the newspaper "Handelsblatt".

More than 3,000 researchers were considered by the Handeslblatt for it’s ranking of research strong economists. Prof. Dr. Thushyanthan Baskaran from the Department of Economics at the University of Siegen made it into the Top 100 in two categories: In the category "Current Research Achievement" he finished in 58th place. In the category "Overall research performance of researchers under 40" the 36-year-old scientist even achieved place 16. In the last Handelsblatt survey of 2015, Baskaran had been listed among the top 100 German-speaking economists as well. "It's great that I was able to maintain this position in the current ranking," said the scientist.

Baskaran researches and teaches at the University of Siegen in the field of "Applied Microeconomics" and deals with topics such as regional economics, finance, political and development economy. He explores, for example, how federalism and regional growth are interrelated, whether politicians use their power for economic electoral gifts, and how community consolidation can reduce costs. Baskaran studied economics at the Free University of Berlin, then did his doctorate in Heidelberg and taught at the University of Göttingen. In 2015 he accepted a call to the Faculty III (School of Economics, Business Informatics and Business Law) of the University of Siegen.

The economist ranking of the Handelsblatt is scientifically supported by a team of eleven professors. The score of a researcher is determined by the number of publications and the reputation of the journals in which he published his articles.
