Medicine of the Future, Together with Rotterdam

The Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, the University of Siegen and the four Siegen clinics plan to expand their cooperation. To this end, the partners in Siegen signed a cooperation agreement.

For quite some time now, the University of Siegen, the Erasmus Medical Center (Erasmus MC) Rotterdam and the four Siegen clinics have been working together within the framework of the model project "Rethinking Medicine". This cooperation is now being expanded. "We are taking the next step in the relationship between Siegen and Rotterdam. This is a wonderful moment," said Prof. Dr. Hans van Leeuwen, Dean of the Erasmus MC, at the signing of the contract in the New Senate Hall of the University of Siegen. "We are very happy about this cooperation and highly motivated to work together with Erasmus MC and the clinics on new ideas for the future of medicine. Because that is the core of our model project 'Rethinking Medicine'," said Prof. Dr. Holger Burckhart, Rector of the University of Siegen.

For two days (18 and 19 November) a delegation of the EMC around Dean van Leeuwen travelled to Siegen. Together the partners discussed details of the cooperation. Consulting with the Erasmus MC is an important part in the further development of the School of Life Science (LWF) of the University of Siegen and the offer of training programs in the field of health sciences. The profile of the LWF is inspired and modeled after the profile of the Erasmus MC, but with a focus on medical education. Prof. Jaap Verweij, as founding dean of the LWF, has laid the foundations for this. The renowned oncologist and former dean of Erasmus MC forms the central anchor point for the cooperation with Rotterdam. There are also plans to develop additional modules - on the one hand for Erasmus MC students in Siegen, and on the other for Siegen students in Rotterdam. The joint application for European research programs is also part of the cooperation.

The Siegen clinics cooperate with Rotterdam in the training of physicians. Erasmus MC medical students can gain practical experience during their studies and complete part of the "Practical Year" (PY) in Siegen. In the future, it will also be possible for Dutch students to sit in on the work of their family doctors in the region. For the Siegen clinics, the cooperation agreement was signed by Bertram Müller (Managing Director, Siegen District Hospital), Dr. Josef Rosenbauer (Managing Director, Diakonie in South Westphalia), Stefanie Wied (Managing Director, DRK Children's Hospital) and Hans-Jürgen Winkelmann (Managing Director, Marien Gesellschaft Siegen).

"Erasmus MC Rotterdam is one of the leading medical institutions, worldwide, as well as one of the most renowned. We are very proud of this cooperation, precisely because Rotterdam has long stood for continuous innovation in the fields of medical care, education and interdisciplinary research," said Prof. Dr. Christoph Strünck, who took over from Prof. Jaap Verweij as Founding Dean of the LWF at the University of Siegen in November 2019.

Prof. van Leuwen also appreciates the commonalities between the cooperation partners. "We in the Netherlands face the same challenges as in they do in Germany. We also have rural regions and ask ourselves how we can position ourselves for the future in medicine, how the training of physicians can be structured," said the dean of Erasmus MC, highlighting the similarities of the partners: "We in Rotterdam are not only concerned with the development and use of new digital technologies, we also care about people, because they have to want to use digital tools. Also, socio-economic aspects are important to us, high-tech medicine must be accessible to everyone, not just wealthy people. We are on the same track here."

The cooperation will be intensified in the future: Siegen and Rotterdam will enter into joint European networks, develop further training concepts and cooperate in interdisciplinary research on digitally supported care.
