Meet Siggi, our new mascot!
European bison underlines the link between the university and the region. Soon to be used in international publicity.
In Germany, universities don't have mascots as a rule. But they are common in the US and other countries. That's why the International Office of the University of Siegen wanted to adopt a mascot for publicity abroad.
But what animal is associated with the region? The obvious candidate was the European bison! Since these animals were released into the wild of the Rothaar mountains in 2010, they have become symbolic for Siegen-Wittgenstein. This is why the bison was chosen as the University of Siegen's mascot. It underlines the close links between the university and the region. As from now, the brown soft toy named Siggi will give the university a face in our publicity work, especially abroad.
It will represent Siegen for example in autumn 2021 at the Pop-Up University in Tulsa (Oklahoma, USA). "At international shows, a cuddly toy is always an asset. It attracts attention and is a great ice-breaker that gets visitors chatting with us", said Prof. Dr. Petra M. Vogel, Prorector for International and Lifelong Learning. Alongside the International Office and the Executive Department for Press, Communication and Marketing, she was instrumental in promoting the idea of the mascot. Incidentally, Siggi was inspired by the mascot of the university's eSports team, the Siegen Bisons.
Siggi keyrings are now available from the university shop. The large-format Siggi is only used for publicity purposes and is not on sale.
