Artificial intelligence for safer technical systems

With the participation of the University of Siegen, the TRUST-E research project is developing innovative concepts for the holistic condition monitoring of sensors, modules, and systems.

Current electronic systems, such as those required for autonomous vehicles and industrial automation, must function in a trustworthy, reliable way at all times. Especially in safety-relevant applications, this places very high demands on advanced sensor technology and intelligent control systems. Against this backdrop, innovative concepts for the holistic condition monitoring of sensors, modules, and systems are being researched in the newly launched "TRUST-E" project, in which Siegen is involved.

"The project gives us the opportunity to be at the forefront of work on new artificial intelligence applications for improving the safety of our technology," explains Dr. Michael Wahl, head of the "Medical Informatics and Microsystem Design-NT" department at the University of Siegen. For this purpose, in line with the notion of "edge computing", information is recorded remotely directly at points of a system to be monitored and processed and then evaluated using methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning. This requires special high-performance processors whose computational methods must be specially adapted to the system to be monitored. In this way, applications can still run and function fast enough even with automated condition monitoring.

"TRUST-E" is scheduled to run for three years and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the framework of the industrially oriented European research clusters Penta and EURIPIDES2 to the amount of approx. €2.5 million. Roughly €282,000 have been allocated to the University of Siegen. The project, the funds for which were raised by Dr. Wahl, includes a total of 23 partners from Sweden, Belgium, and Germany. On the industry side, Mercedes-Benz AG, SIEMENS AG, which is acting as coordinator, and Volkswagen AG are among the participants, with the University of Siegen being the only German university involved. The project is being carried out in close cooperation with Prof. Frank Gronwald from the "Reliability of Technical Systems and Electrical Measurement Technology" department. He too is certain that TRUST-E will yield numerous benefits for all involved: "With this project, we will strengthen our cooperation with European industry, establish ourselves in a new and extremely important field of research, and give students and doctoral candidates the chance to work in this exciting field."
