PULSE: Postdigital Laptop Ensemble University of Siegen
The Post-digital Laptop Ensemble at University of Siegen (PULSE) is an innovative technology-mediated music ensemble and a post-digital educational space for teacher training. PULSE meets the needs of future educators through application and critical reflection on the role of technology in music creation, teaching and learning.
The project builds on the models of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk), the Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk), and other laptop ensembles by treating laptops, iPads and other portable digital devices, as effective musical and pedagogical instruments.
The Post-digital Laptop Ensemble at the University of Siegen (PULSE), launched in the winter semester of 2023, is the university's newest musical ensemble and represents the fusion of music, technology, and education. PULSE aims to equip future music creators and educators with the skills and knowledge to integrate digital technologies into their practice. Inspired by models such as the Princeton Laptop Orchestra and the Stanford Laptop Orchestra, PULSE considers laptops, iPads, and other digital and analog devices as effective musical instruments and pedagogical tools. The PULSE project incorporates digital and analog technologies and implements diverse digital music composition, production, and performance activities. Through hands-on, collaborative, and creativity-driven approaches, the project enables students to engage actively in their learning, fostering critical thinking and artistic expression with digital technologies. A key achievement of PULSE has been its establishment as a permanent course offering within the Institut Musik's curriculum, illustrating its value and ensuring its sustainability. The forthcoming concert in the summer of 2024 is a testament to the students' accomplishments and the ensemble's potential to contribute to the community. This event, alongside ongoing workshops, collaborative projects, and research initiatives, underscores the project's commitment to continuous development and community engagement. PULSE has made substantial strides in advancing digital music education, fostering a vibrant and collaborative learning environment, and laying the groundwork for future innovations in post-digital educational
spaces at the University of Siegen.
