Study Program
The Department of Chemistry and Biology offers a
four-semester Master of Science in Chemistry
programme with excellent training and research
opportunities. It builds on a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry
and further deepens your knowledge through a variety of
specialised and research-oriented modules.
You will be provided with an in-depth scientific education in a
small classroom setting. Your first semester
modules will further develop your knowledge of inorganic,
organic, and physical chemistry. In addition, you can select
modules in analytical chemistry, macromolecular, or building
chemistry and gain practical experience in laboratory courses.
In the second and third semesters, you can already start to
specialise in an area of your choice and gain practical
research experience in modern topics of chemistry. In your
final Master's thesis project, you will work
with a professor in the specialist area of your
choice, giving you practical experience with modern
equipment and a valuable postgraduate experience.
We have a strong teaching record in chemistry and were among the first universities in Germany to offer an international chemistry programme. Many of our international students stay on to join our research groups in the Department of Chemistry as PhD students or are hired by some of the world's largest chemical companies.
The programme is built upon the recommendations of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) and is fully accredited.
While the programme consists of some mandatory modules, a lot of elective courses are available. You may select areas of chemistry that you wish to specialise in, such as analytical, building, inorganic, macromolecular, organic, physical, and theoretical chemistry. In addition, you can also specialise in a collection of theme-based modules that lead to specialisations in Materials and Interfaces, Light and Matter, or Molecular Sciences.
Topics of courses include:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Biomimetic Molecular Machines
- Chemo- and Biosensors
- Chemistry of Building Materials and Ceramics
- Fast Ion Conductors
- Interface and Colloid Science
- Ionic Liquids
- Languages and Soft Skills
- Luminescent Materials
- Materials Science and Testing Methods
- Micro- and Nanofabrication Techniques
- Modern Microscopy and Surface Analysis
- Nanostructured Functional Materials
- Nanotechnology
- Organic Radicals
- Photochemistry and Photobiology
- Polymer Chemistry
- Quantum Chemistry
- Solid State and Coordination Chemistry
- Solid State NMR Spectroscopy
- Supercritical Fluids
- Supramolecular Nanoassemblies
- Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy
Admission Requirements
1. Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or equivalent (with grade 2.5 or better according to ECTS).
2. If the above criteria are not met, there is the possibility to qualify on the basis of letters of recommendation and a discussion with academic experts.
3. Proficiency in English:
- TOEFL (Code No. 8429) 533 (paper-based), 200 (computer-based), 72 (internet-based); or
- CAE level C; or IELTS grade 6; or
- English on level B2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Study organization
Examination regulations
Examination regulations (FPOs) specify the basic structures of
a degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to
be studied). Students are automatically subject to the current
version of their FPO when they matriculate for their first
subject-related semester. This means that even if the FPO
changes during their studies, the original version according to
which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the
FPO does not expire).
Degree plan
The respective degree plan is the recommended example progress
of the studies in individual subjects and is part of a FPO.
Module manuals
Supplementary provisions and details for any module to be
studied can be found in the module manually (e.g. requirements
for taking a written test or content-related information on the
modules/events, ...).
Internship rules
The internship rules define the conditions under which the
required or optional internships must be completed.
You can also take part in:
- the department's scientific colloquia, a series of talks given by internal and external experts on relevant and current topics
- JCF, the student-run chapter of young chemists of the Germany Chemical Society, which organises talks with industry professionals as well as social events
Curriculum
We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your
degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that
you know which modules are intended for the start of your
studies.
