Overview of dates and deadlines

Please note that both our application process and the study program will undergo major changes for the winter semester 2023/24. The most current information is available on this following page.

The degree program

The International Graduate Studies in Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary study program. The duration of the study course is two years, divided into 4 semesters. Courses start mid October each year. Medium of instruction is English, however, basic German language courses are mandatory for all Mechatronics students during their studies.

A Master of Science degree in Mechatronics will be awarded upon successful completion of the program. The grades and credit points of the Mechatronics program are based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) which guarantees high international acceptance of the Master degree.

Students of Mechatronics join us from all around the world so the course is designed to first integrate the knowledge of students coming from various fields and cultures (alignment subjects). These subjects are based on students entry qualifications.

In the second and third semester relatively complex courses are offered providing students with broad knowledge in mechanical as well as electrical engineering.

During the fourth semester students have to write their Master thesis based on their research. The research is done under the supervision of teaching staff at the University of Siegen, however, the research can be done at the University or in the industry. This provides excellent opportunities for the future professional career.

Major research areas include robotics, computer science, electrical systems, control engineering, material science, machines, automation, networking, power systems, multi-sensor systems and design. Moreover, cooperation with other departments guarantees an even larger selection. Some exemplary research topics include:

  • Medical surgery robots, Mobile robotics, Telematics,Control of mechatronic system, 3D vision,
  • Photo-Mixer Device (PMD) technology
  • Design and construction
  • Mechanics
  • Modelling and simulation
  • Power electronics
  • Electrical devices
  • Neural networks
  • Network computing etc.

Study organization

Examination regulations/degree plan/module manuals/internship rules

Examination regulations (POs) specify the basic structures of a degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to be studied). Students are automatically subject to the current version of their PO when they matriculate for their first subject-related semester. This means that even if the PO changes during their studies, the original version according to which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the PO does not expire).
The respective degree plan is the recommended example progress of the studies in individual subjects and is part of a PO.
Supplementary regulations and details for any module to be studied can be found in the module manual (e.g. requirements for taking a written test or content-related information on the modules/events, ...).
The internship rules define the conditions under which the required or optional internships must be completed.

We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that you know which modules are intended for the start of your studies.
