13 Tenure-Track Professorships to Support Young Scientists at the University of Siegen

The University of Siegen has successfully applied for the tenure track programme with its proposal prepared by the House of Young Talents under the responsibility of the Prorector for Research and Future Academics; all 13 tenure track professorships applied for by Siegen have been approved. The funding for the University of Siegen amounts to almost 12.3 million euros.

(18 September 2019) The tenure track professorship is aimed at young scientists in their early career phase. After a successful probationary phase (usually 6 years), the tenure track professorship provides for an immediate transition to a permanent position – a lifetime professorship. When submitting their applications, the universities had to present overall concepts that included systematic considerations on the further development of the personnel structure and career paths for junior researchers as a whole. "I am very pleased that our university's very good proposal has been approved in full and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this project – especially Prorector Prof. Haring Bolívar and Dr. Daniel Müller, Head of the House of Young Talents," said Rector Prof. Dr. Holger Burckhart.

"With the programme for the promotion of young scientists, the Federal Government and the Länder have decisively improved the career opportunities of highly qualified young scientists. The newly created tenure track professorships will be permanently available to generations of young scientists. In addition, a cultural and structural change will be initiated at the universities: The funding has brought a whole new dynamic to the tenure track system in Germany," explained the Chairman of the Joint Science Conference, Prof. Dr. Konrad Wolf, Minister for Science, Continuing Education and Culture of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

"For many young scientists, the tenure track professorship will make the path to a lifetime professorship easier to plan and more transparent. The tenure track professorship is thus highly attractive for young scientists from Germany and abroad and strengthens Germany as a location for innovation," said Anja Karliczek, Deputy Chairwoman of the Joint Science Conference and Federal Minister of Education and Research.
