The European Cuckoo at the Annual Reception of the House of Young Talents

In addition to numerous scholarship recipients and mentors, the European cuckoo was also a guest at the annual reception of the House of Young Talents, as it was used an example of a master in lying in the interdisciplinary dialogue on the subject of "Lies - in negotiations and in the animal kingdom" between the biologist Prof. Dr. Klaudia Witte and the jurist Prof. Dr. Peter Krebs.

(22 October 2019) The approximately 80 guests in the senate hall of the campus Adolf-Reichwein-Straße listened eagerly as Prof. Witte explained how the cuckoo lays its well camouflaged eggs in foreign nests and in the end throws out the eggs of the host bird. But also humans can deceive. Prof. Krebs amused the audience when he reported that people sometimes deny their own football club during negotiations and claim to be a fan of the same club as the negotiating partner.

After the interesting dialogue, the head of the HYT, Dr. Daniel Müller, welcomed the 18 new scholarship recipients of the HYT Young Academy. From now on, the HYT will fund the young scientists with a scholarship and support them on their personal career path. Benjamin Bäumer, Stefan Buchen, Jana Gericke, Arpan Ghosal, Julian Scherer und Finja Walsdorff receive a doctoral scholarship. Vanessa Dobbener, Luisa Fischer, Florian Karl, Piriyanga Karunananthan, Tekla Khurtsidze, Maximilian Krell, Thi Ngoc Nguyen, Ambra Ottersbach, Katharina Pelkmann, Constance Remhof, Kathrin Schneider und Lucija Skoric are funded by the graduate centre on their way to a Master's degree..

Dr. Daniel Müller: "The scholarship recipients were selected by our award committee - the vice-deans for research of the faculties and myself - on the basis of their outstanding academic achievements and doctoral projects. It is therefore purely a programme of excellence, without quotas for the individual disciplines. However, I am particularly pleased that we are able to cover the breadth of the university and support representatives of all faculties at the same time."

At the end of the annual reception, the alumnae and alumni of the Young Academy, whose scholarships ended in the last semester, were given a farewell: Stefan Buchen, Marius Dilling, Vanessa Dohrmann, Michael Gawlik, Madeleine Höfer, Sandra-Janina Jugl, Timo Simnacher, Daniel Suer und Julian Weiß received a certificate and a small present.
