Scholarship Guidelines

In our PROMOS Scholarship Guidelines 2024 (German) you find important information about the scholarship program. Information about scholarship awarding, calculation and payment as well as reimbursement cases are summarized below.

Scholarship Awarding

Only participants of the Global Exchange Program of the University of Siegen are eligible for PROMOS partial scholarships. Your exchange studies at our partner university must be between 4 weeks and 6 months.

When registering for the Global Exchange Program, you can apply directly for funding through PROMOS. All applications that have been submitted completely and on time will be reviewed and evaluated by the respective subject coordinator and the project coordinator. The overall evaluation results in a ranking which is used to award partial scholarships in case our funds are not sufficient to support all participating students. Students receive selection results by e-mail in February of the respective project year.
For the allocation of exchange spots and partial scholarships, your previous academic achievements are weighted at 50%, the purpose of the stay at 30% and your knowledge of the language of instruction and, if applicable, the national language, at 20%.

Grant Calculation

Studies abroad of at least 4 weeks and no more than 6 month duration must be completed at partner universities of the University of Siegen.

Students who have been offered a PROMOS scholarship usually receive a monthly grant for their academic stay and a one-time travel grant. Grant rates vary by country of destination. The number of scholarships and the grant combination is subject to sufficient funds.

In total funding is possible for a duration of 12 months:

  • up to 6 months during undergraduate and graduate studies, respectively
  • the funding can be split and used several times within one study cycle (e.g. twice for 3 months)

Grant Payment

The grant payment is contingent upon timely submission of the Global Exchange Program Documents

Travel grant and first instalment of the monthly grant are provided, once the signed scholarship agreement, letter of acceptance and enrolment certificate have been submitted.

The one-time travel grant is usually provided one month prior to the planned start date, the first instalment of the monthly grant is provided by the start of each month.

Reimbursement Cases

If the Global Exchange Program Documents are not submitted or not submitted on time, partial scholarship must be reimbursed.
If the stay does not begin as agreed in the Scholarship Agreement or is terminated prematurely, the grant must be reimbursed.

The Department International Student Affairs will send out a notice giving four weeks to reimburse the amount.
If no reimbursement is made, the case is handed over to Division 3: Legal and Academic Affairs, which will take appropriate legal action.
