A Notable Development

More than 19,200 students and a strong increase in new students: The University of Siegen continues at a high enrollment level in the winter semester 2018/2019.

At the University of Siegen the new winter semester begins in October 2018 with strong numbers. 19209 students are enrolled at the start (as of 11. Oct. 2018). This continues to be a high level. Compared to the previous year, the total number has fallen by a mere 0.7 percent. The university records a strong increase in the number of first-year students. 2,639 freshmen enrolled for the new winter semester - an increase of 4.5 percent compared to the previous year (2,526 freshmen).

Equally gratifying is the number of international students in Siegen. Their number increased by 2.6 percent to 2,367. To the group of international students belong, on the one hand, the so-called “Bildungsinländer”, who have obtained the university entrance qualification in Germany but have a different citizenship. On the other hand, foreign students who change from abroad directly - here the University of Siegen recorded a solid increase of 17 percent. In addition, there are 172 foreign prospective students who are completing the German language course at the University of Siegen.

"This is a notable development and speaks for the attractiveness of the University of Siegen. I am very happy about it. Especially the significant increase in the first semester is a success for our university. The fact that the number of international students and prospective students is also rising confirms our increased internationalization, "said Prof. Dr. Holger Burckhart, Rector of the University of Siegen, evaluating the result. These are preliminary data as of 11.Oct. 2018.

In NRW, the overall student number status is similar. The overall number of students at public universities fell by 1.1 percent. The number of undergraduate students at universities also fell by 1.1 percent on average. Official data of all NRW universities will be available as of the deadline 01. Dec. 2018.

Although the numbers are already convincing, there are still some study-places available - until 15.Oct. 2018 enrollment in admission-free courses is still possible. Information about the degree courses can be found here.

Huge Interest in Psychology

Particularly, the Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and the teaching degree programs are in high demand at the University of Siegen in the new semester. Number one is the Bachelor Social Work with a total of 451 undergraduates. The degree program is particularly popular with women, while most male undergraduate students opted for the Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. "There are now 50 percent more places in the degree program Social Work. The number of places for the teaching degree program for elementary school has also been increased. With this we have reacted to a social development. At the same time, there will be more teaching staff to meet the needs of students, "said Prof. Dr. Michael Bongardt, Vice Rector for Studies, Teaching and Teacher Education.

Traditionally popular at the University of Siegen are the teacher training courses. The leader in the new winter semester is the bachelor's program teaching at elementary schools (255 new students) and teaching at grammar schools and comprehensive schools (subject: German, 162 freshmen). The bachelor's program "German and European Business Law" is in high demand with 162 new students. In the winter semester 2018/19, the bachelor's degree in psychology starts for the first time at the University of Siegen. Demand for study places was extremely high, a total of 1,430 applications were received. 67 freshmen are now starting their studies. "We have achieved a great success for the start of the new bachelor program Psychology in Siegen," explained Philipp Schmidt, Head of the student service department.

The most sought-after study programs will be the special concern of the rectorate and the schools of the university, in order to enable the best possible study situation for all students, as well as access to seminars / events.

Improved Catering

The fundamental modernization of the campus Adolf-Reichwein-Straße has been under way for a year now. The cafeteria, university library and two office and seminar buildings are being completely renovated inside and out - a campus area of 34,000 square meters. The cafeteria and dinning hall have moved into two interim module buildings ("IM" and "IC").

As a new offer, two catering trucks are now added on the campus Unteres Schloss. The Studierendenwerk offers snacks, drinks, a stew and a pasta dish from Monday to Friday - all dishes are also available to take away. The food trucks can be found behind the partial-library Unteres Schloss at the end of Grabenstraße.

Bürgerbüro & Bus Stop

The Bürgerbüro (local city office) on the Adolf Reichwein Campus will be available to new students for registration and re-registration in the city of Siegen until October 12th.

There are no new bus lines, but there is an extension of the Uni-Express (UX) lines. All UX lines will run one week prior and after the beginning and end of lecture time, resp. To ensure that students can remain dry while waiting on the bus in future, a passenger shelter will be built in the area of the bus stop on the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße.
