Frequently asked questions and the answers

Who can participate?

Students, trainees, employees, alumni, guests and guest students of the University of Siegen as well as students from other universities are eligible to participate in university sports courses.
Students, trainees, alumni and employees of the University of Siegen are eligible to participate in cooperation courses. Guests, visiting students, alumni and students from other universities generally have the option of purchasing a regular membership with the cooperating sports organisations. To do so, please contact the relevant sports organisation directly.
Participation in sports courses is generally only permitted from the age of 18. However, underage students may be granted an exception for university sports courses with the consent of their legal guardians. This declaration of consent must be submitted in digital form to info@sport.uni-siegen.de before booking.

How can alumni obtain the sports card?

Alumni are defined as all persons who study or have studied at the University of Siegen, conduct or have conducted research and teaching, or work or have worked there. You can register with the alumni network here. Once you have registered with the alumni network and received your AlumniCard, you can book the sports card for alumni. You will be asked for your alumni membership number. Since there is no alumni membership number, simply enter what connects you to the university in this mandatory field, for example: ‘former student’, ‘former employee’. When attending sports courses, proof of registration with the alumni network must be provided.

How do I book a course?

Bookings are made online via the University Sports website.
To take part in University Sports courses, you must first purchase a sports card. This is a flat rate: with the sports card, you can book any University Sports course at no additional cost. Registration for University Sports courses takes place on a weekly basis. This means you can always book your sports appointments one week in advance.
In addition to university sports courses, cooperation courses are also offered. You only need to book these courses once, which gives you a fixed place on the course for the entire booking period. A participation fee is payable when booking. You do not need a sports card to book cooperation courses.

What is the sports card?

The sports card gives you access to university sports courses. It is a flat rate: with the sports card, you can book any university sports course at no additional cost.
No sports card is required to participate in cooperation courses.

Do I need the sports card to book cooperation courses?

No, the sports card is only required for university sports courses. Cooperation courses are booked directly.

When is the Early Bird Sports Card available?

We only offer the Sports Card at an Early Bird rate at the beginning of the semester. We would be delighted if as many students, trainees, alumni and employees of the University of Siegen as possible decided to get active this semester!
Please note: There is no Early Bird Sports Card at the beginning of the lecture-free period. This offer is only available at the beginning of the semester.

Is the sports card also valid during the lecture-free period?

Yes, the sports card is valid for the entire semester, including the lecture-free period.

Why can't guests, visiting students and students from other universities book an early bird sports card?

University sports are a service provided by the university and are therefore primarily aimed at students, trainees, alumni and employees of the University of Siegen. That is why these people are given preferential treatment.

Why can't guests, guest students and students from other universities book cooperation courses?

Cooperation requires shared interests. The cooperating sports organisations are interested in students, trainees, alumni and employees of the University of Siegen, who are to be offered a special range of sports activities. All other groups of people have the option of purchasing a regular membership with the cooperating sports organisations. To do so, please contact the relevant sports organisation directly.

How do I pay?

Payment of the participation fee can only be made after registration via the booking system and by direct debit. To do this, a direct debit mandate must be issued in the booking system.

Why are there different rates for participation fees?

The participation fees are used to finance university sports. In the spirit of solidarity and in light of different income situations, the fees for employees and alumni are slightly higher than those for students and trainees.
Guests, guest students and students from other universities must pay a fee based on market prices. They are not allowed to benefit from subsidies for university sports from public funds. This is stipulated in the EU State Aid Framework.

When does registration start?

Registration usually starts at the beginning of the lecture period. Please note the announcements on our website.

When do the courses start?

The courses usually start in the second week of the lecture period. Please note the announcements on our website.

Do courses also take place on public holidays?

There are no university sports courses on public holidays. As a general rule, courses only take place when the university is open. There may be exceptions for joint courses. Please refer to the information in the booking portal for all courses.

When do the courses end?

The courses usually end at the end of the semester. Sometimes individual courses end earlier, for example if the instructor is on holiday.

Where do the courses take place?

University sports courses usually take place on the AR campus. Cooperation courses take place at sports clubs and commercial sports companies. The booking system indicates where each course takes place.

How much does a course cost?

There are 1) university sports courses and 2) cooperation courses: 1) To participate in university sports courses, you must purchase a sports card. There are no further costs associated with participating in university sports courses. 2) To participate in cooperation courses, a participation fee must be paid at the time of booking. A sports card is not required.

What happens if there are insufficient funds in my account when the course fee is debited?

If you have booked a sports card, it will be revoked. You can purchase a new sports card. If the payment is still unsuccessful, your sports card will be revoked again and you will receive a message from the ZB-SB informing you that you are now blocked from university sports for the time being, meaning that you can no longer purchase a sports card. In this case, please contact the ZB-SB in person so that we can find a solution together.
If you have booked a cooperation course, we will contact you so that we can find a solution together. If the situation cannot be resolved immediately, your eligibility to participate in the booked course will be revoked. Nevertheless, you must pay for all services already used. This includes the administration fee of 20 euros in all cases. In addition, you will be responsible for any costs incurred for return debits.

The course is already fully booked: Can I still participate?

For university sports courses, the instructor decides which additional persons may participate in the course. Please contact the instructor.
For cooperation courses, you may generally only participate if you are registered.

How can I contact the instructor?

In principle, instructors can only be contacted on site at the relevant sports course. Many instructors provide their personal contact details there, allowing you to contact them by email, for example. University Sports is not permitted to disclose the contact details of instructors. University Sports also does not forward enquiries to instructors.

Why should I cancel a booking if I cannot attend?

If you cancel a booking, your place will be made available to other people. This allows other people to participate. If you repeatedly block places (failing to attend despite registering), ZB-SB may revoke your eligibility to participate in university sports.

The check will be quicker if you can also show your digital registration confirmation for the course.

Can I bring a guest to the course?

Guests are allowed to attend university sports courses provided that the course in question is open to guests, the guest has purchased a sports card and is registered for the relevant date in the course in question. This also applies to guests who do not actively participate but only wish to watch.
For cooperation courses, this question should be clarified in advance with the relevant sports organisation. Please enquire directly with the sports company or the course instructor.

Can I bring my child to the course?

As a general rule, children are not allowed to participate in university sports courses. Only in exceptional cases may you bring your own children. In such cases, they will not be covered by the university's insurance and may not actively participate in the sports programme under any circumstances.

Can I do a trial training session?

A trial training session is possible in a university sports course, provided that a sports card has been purchased in advance and registration for the course in question has been completed. A trial training session without a sports card is not permitted.
For cooperation courses, this question should be clarified in advance with the relevant sports organisation. Please enquire directly with the sports company or the course instructor.

My course has been cancelled: Will I get my money back?

As a rule, fees for university sports courses cannot be refunded. In particular, the fee for the sports card will not be refunded. This also applies if the sports programme offered changes after the sports card has been booked.
In the case of cooperation courses, the extent to which a refund is possible depends on the specific individual case.
Please also note the information on cancelling a booking.

I have injured myself or fallen ill: will I get my money back?

See: How can I cancel a booking?

How do I report an accident?

In the event of an accident, it is essential to inform the responsible exercise supervisor. Together, you must complete this online form to document the first aid provided. This is required by law (§ 24 (6) DGUV).
Furthermore, in order to claim insurance benefits, it is recommended that you report the accident to the Student Secretariat. To do so, these two documents must be completed and submitted in digital form by email to the relevant department in the Student Secretariat:
  1. Confirmation from the instructor
  2. Accident report
If you have any questions, please contact the Student Secretariat or the University's Occupational Health and Safety Department.

How am I insured when participating in university sports?

Participation in sports activities is generally at your own risk and personal responsibility, i.e. in the event of damage, participants must ensure that they have adequate private accident and liability insurance cover or are liable themselves.
Under certain conditions, enrolled students at the University of Siegen are covered by statutory accident insurance. In particular, it must be examined in each individual case whether the sports activity in question has a health-promoting function or serves the social integration of students. Binding information on the scope and extent of accident insurance is available directly from the Unfallkasse NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia Accident Insurance Fund): https://www.unfallkasse-nrw.de/service/haeufige-fragen/studierende.html
The University of Siegen is only liable for damages resulting from injury to life, limb or health that are based on an intentional or negligent breach of duty, as well as for breaches of essential contractual obligations (‘cardinal obligations’), and the amount of liability is limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this type of contract.
In the case of cooperation courses, the cooperating sports organisation joins the University of Siegen and is liable in the same way for damages arising within its sphere of influence.

I am pregnant: is there anything I need to bear in mind?

Pregnancy should be reported to the University's Family Service Office. They will then carry out a risk assessment and clarify the conditions under which further participation in the sports programme appears possible.

Diversity: How inclusive is university sports?

University sports are easily accessible and offer many options. They should be as barrier-free as possible. Should barriers nevertheless arise, we will immediately endeavour to find suitable solutions. We welcome any feedback regarding existing barriers: info@sport.uni-siegen.de
All course descriptions are available in German and English. No university sports course excludes participants on the basis of gender, age, ethnicity, religion, origin or sexual orientation. The criterion of athletic ability (courses for advanced participants) is only considered if there is also a course in the same sport that is open to all levels. All university sports texts are formulated in a gender-neutral manner.
The ZB-SB is committed to the establishment of unisex changing rooms and unisex toilets. However, the Workplace Ordinance ASR A4.1 stipulates: ‘Separate sanitary facilities must be provided for female and male employees.’ Therefore, it is unfortunately not possible to set up unisex changing rooms to comply with the requirements of the General Equal Treatment Act.

Are there any competitive sports?

The University of Siegen does not explicitly promote competitive or elite sports. There is no scouting or promotion of sporting talent.
Nevertheless, there may be university sports courses that are designed as competitive courses and include a corresponding training programme. These sports courses sometimes also take part in regional tournaments.

Can I participate in university championships?

Of course, we will be happy to register you for the university championships if you are interested. You can find the current conditions of participation and dates here on the adh website.
Please note that registration requires advance notice, so you must contact us in good time at info@sport.uni-siegen.de. Please also note that University Sports and the ZB-SB do not cover any costs, including the entry fee.

Is there a swimming pool?

The teaching pool at the University of Siegen on the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße campus was taken out of service in spring 2022. Significant investment would be required for renovation and continued operation. In light of the necessary energy cost savings, the university management has decided to discontinue the operation of the teaching pool. For this reason, there will be no university sports courses in the area of water exercise for the time being.

 Is there a gym?

Yes, there is a gym in the AR-S building. If you would like to train there, please book a sports card and a corresponding course in university sports. For free training, speak to your instructor at University Sports and make an appointment with them at the gym. It is not possible to train at the gym without an instructor. The gym also does not have regular opening hours for free training. Employees of the University of Siegen may have the opportunity to train at the gym as part of the company sports programme (see company sports courses offered).

Can I use free gym hours?

No, free gym hours are not available for individual use. If you would like to do more sport and take advantage of free gym hours, you are welcome to apply to become an exercise instructor in university sports. How does that work? See: How can I offer a course in university sports?

Can I borrow sports equipment?

No, borrowing sports equipment is not permitted. Even exercise instructors are not authorised to borrow sports equipment from the university themselves or to lend it to participants.

How can I offer a university sports course myself?

If you would like to offer a university sports course, please contact the ZB-SB at info@sport.uni-siegen.de
Please note that you need a first aid certificate that is no more than two years old to lead a sports course. The first aid course must be in accordance with the “Joint Principles for Training and Further Education in First Aid” of the Federal Working Group for First Aid. Therefore, only courses offered by the following aid organisations are eligible: Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland e.V. (ASB), Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft e.V. (DLRG), Deutsches Rotes Kreuz e.V. (DRK), Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. (JUH), Malteser Hilfsdienst e.V. (MHD).
Please also note that you need a valid sports licence to lead a sports programme. The training completed must comprise at least 90 hours and correspond to at least level 4 of the German Qualifications Framework (e.g. DOSB C licence). Preferably, this should be a specialist licence for the sport in question, but a multi-sport licence is also sufficient. Only sports activities with an extremely low risk potential may be led without a licence in exceptional cases. A licence is required for fitness and health courses, courses with artistic elements, and small and large sports games.

How can I offer a cooperation course myself?

Cooperation courses are courses offered by the University of Siegen in collaboration with regional sports clubs and commercial sports companies. Cooperation courses usually take place at the sports organisation with their trainers.
The sports organisation cooperating with the University provides the sports facility, including the necessary sports equipment, and the instructors for the sports programme. The sports organisation ensures compliance with legal safety requirements. These include, in particular, the safety of the sports facility and sports equipment, the organisation of effective first aid and the qualification of the instructors employed.
Further information on cooperation courses is available on request from info@sport.uni-siegen.de.

Can I reserve the sports hall for my course or my own sporting event?

No, that is not possible. Due to various safety regulations, the use of sports facilities by third parties involves a considerable amount of bureaucratic effort. We regret this and ask for your understanding that the ZB-SB does not have the resources to accommodate such requests.

Who can I contact if I have questions, problems or complaints?

The University Sports team can be reached at info@sport.uni-siegen.de.
