The study program
Biomedical Technology is a young and rapidly growing
research field at the interface between biomedicine,
biotechnology, bio-computer science, pharmacy and engineering.
Modern medicine would be inconceivable without it, since it is
only the interaction of these disciplines that creates the
Elements and Principles for developing new
diagnostic/monitoring procedures, drugs and vaccines,
individualizing medical therapy approaches and assessing
disease risks.
Today, research and development in medicine are only possible
through the interdisciplinary collaboration of physicians,
biologists, computer scientists and engineers, who, however,
have different professional traditions and technical languages.
The aim of the Master's degree program in Biomedical Technology
is to overcome the boundaries between the various disciplines
in order to optimally prepare students for interdisciplinary
research and development work in a competitive, medical
environment.
Professional perspectives
The study program offers a qualified education in the field
of Biomedical Technology, which enables graduates to work
independently and responsibly in academic and industrial
environments. The graduates are highly qualified professionals
who are positioned at the interfaces between biomedicine,
bio-computer science and biotechnology. This enables them to
develop, design and implement biologically relevant processes
in an academic or industrial environment. At the same time,
graduates have supplemented and expanded their basic scientific
knowledge in the field of biomedicine. They have in-depth
expertise in bio-computer science, digital imaging methodology,
and pharmaceutical biotechnology development (including cell
culture technology, drug discovery, and quality assurance).
Based on biomedical fundamentals, these current application
fields are combined to better accommodate new developments in
the field of biomedical research.
The combination of the imparted knowledge and skills qualifies
in particular for the later professional practice in research
and development in scientific institutes, research facilities
and commercial enterprises in the sectors of biomedicine and
pharmaceutical biotechnology. The additional skills acquired in
the areas of English language and scientific texts, patent law,
project management, epidemiology and quality assurance also
qualify students for jobs in management, administration, health
authorities and scientific publishing houses. Successful
completion of the program naturally also qualifies students for
an academic career through a doctorate at a university.
Admission requirement
Prerequisite is a Bachelor's degree in a study program in the field of life sciences (e.g. biology, biotechnology, bio-computer science, biochemistry or biomedicine). Applicants must provide evidence that they have acquired a certain amount of basic medical knowledge and (bio)computer science basics before starting their studies (specifically, at least 30 European Credit Transfer System credits each). The Bachelor's degree program in B.Sc. Digital Biomedical and Health Sciences with a 2nd major course in Biomedical Technology at the University of Siegen fulfills all admission requirements.
