Study program

EMINENT is a two-years master’s programme (120 ECTS). Students will spend their studies at 2 – 4 different universities. All courses are given in English language. Graduates from the EMINENT programme will receive a joint degree, awarded by those universities they have physically studied at for at least one semester. All students spend their first semester at the Hellenic Mediterranean University and gain basic knowledge on functional nanomaterials. The second semester will be spent by all students at the University of Siegen, focussing on sensors, sensing devices and embedded systems. The knowledge acquired in the first year will be the basis for the specialisation tracks, chosen in the third semester.

Specialisation tracks

  • 1. Specialisation into embedded intelligent sensorics (USIEGEN, Germany)
  • 2. Functional materials with optoelectronic properties (HMU, Greece)
  • 3. Internet of Things (UO, France)
  • 4. Natural materials and biosensors (UNL, Portugal)
  • 5. Advanced sensor systems and data processing (VILNIUS TECH, Lithuania)

The EMINENT master’s programme provides students with such a holistic education in embedded intelligence nanosystems engineering. It combines advanced training starting from the nanoscale material and device technology to the computing architectures of intelligent sensing elements, including the perspectives of macroscale integrated systems and meaningful IoT application areas. It joins excellent research and innovation oriented educational expertise across Europe, extending in this case from Portugal in the West to Lithuania in the East. This approach is absolutely unique on the European level and thereby provides unique benefits and opportunities for the students enrolled in the programme:

  • Broad technological and educational expertise, and the research and innovation infrastructure, typically unavailable at a singular institution
  • In depth curriculum on embedded intelligence nanosystems engineering complimented by topical specialisation tracks and digital, entrepreneurial and soft skills
  • Training across existing disciplinary barriers
  • Collaborative education in close contact with associated industrial partners and their networks in the employment market
  • Learning beyond cultural barriers, enabling easier moves between countries
  • Integrated and coordinated enhanced mobility plan
  • Joint degree awarded by the participating academic institutions
  • Consideration of all admitted students for the award of a scholarship
  • EMINENT support service: Enrolment Advisors, visa support, welcome days, mentoring system, Alumni Club, career service, disability support

Admission requirements

  • 1)Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s (BSc) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Material Science, Computer Science or equivalent programmes (Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent) with at least 180 ECTS. The final grade will be translated to the German grading system using the modified Bavarian formula. The translated grade should be at least a 2.7 (“gut”). The BSc must have been obtained by a nationally recognised university and be recognised by all partner institutions’ national legislation. If proof of qualification (bachelor’s degree) is not available at the time of application, students can be admitted conditionally. In this case, they need to submit an official statement from their university stating the expected graduation date and the missing courses in the application form. The final degree certificate and transcript of academic records have to be submitted until the 1st of August in the respective year to finalize the admission procedure. If the original language in the document is not English, an authorized translation has to be submitted as well.
  • 2)Good command of English language skills: B2 level validated by a certification e.g., TOEFL iBT (minimum score 93) or IELTS Academic (minimum score 6.5 with no individual score under 6). The result of the test should be valid at least 14 days after the application deadline. Candidates that have obtained their bachelor’s (or master’s) degree in a study course taught in the English language in an EU country or in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the USA, or Switzerland do not require an English test result. For nationals of countries where English is the ONLY native language, proof of English language skills is also not required.
  • 3)The following information needs to be uploaded with the application form:
    – Two letters of recommendation from scholars of the completed undergraduate programme
    – Information on acquired Soft Skills, publications and relevant experience (e.g., working experience) – optionally
    – CV
    – Copy of passport

Applications must be submitted through online registration at unisono.

The examination regulations relevant at the time shall apply.

Scholarships

Each applicant will automatically be considered to receive a scholarship. The EMINENT scholarship has a duration of up to 2 years and covers travel and living expenses through a monthly payment of 1.400€. To keep a scholarship, the grant holder must successfully pass the first two semester modules with an average grade of 2.7 (in the German grading system). Students that are accepted to the programme but not awarded a scholarship are invited to join the programme at their own expenses.

Study organization

Examination regulations/structure of the master´s programme/module handboock

Examination regulations (POs) specify the basic structures of a degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to be studied). Students are automatically subject to the current version of their PO when they matriculate for their first subject-related semester. This means that even if the PO changes during their studies, the original version according to which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the PO does not expire).
The respective structure of the master’s programme is defined by the mobility scheme and the selected Specialisation. It is stated as part module manual of the PO.
Supplementary provisions and details for any module to be studied can be found in the module manual (e.g. requirements for taking a written test or content-related information on the modules/events, ...).

We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that you know which modules are intended for the start of your studies.
