Advanced Literary Studies: Literature, Culture and Media

 

 

The degree program

The Master's degree program offers a unique profiling: Literature in media context. It pursues the target of inspiring students based on the method competence taught and different scientific perspectives and methods to conduct independent research.

The degree program is interdisciplinary aligned, including the subjects of

• German Studies: Focuses Middle High German and Modern German Literature Science,
• English Studies and
• Roman Studies (French and Spanish).

Placing literature in its media context has a long and highly successful tradition in Siegen. In the 1980st, the first large media-culture-science research associations on "Intermediality" and "Screen media" were founded in Siegen. This research direction can be considered a Siegen invention and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is still committed to this tradition today.

Development and profile of the degree program:

• Acquisition of deeper literature, culture and media-historical knowledge.
• Research-oriented analysis dealing with elements and principles, history and current trends of literature, culture and media-scientific theories and methods.
• Independent and critical analysis of fictional and non-fictional texts and media products under intertextual and intermedial aspects.
• Acquisition of theoretical elements and principles on networking of literature, culture, media studies and publicity, as well as application of this knowledge in projects.
• Development of media-specific forms of communication and drafting the corresponding texts, e.g. reports, leading articles, literature, theatre, film and TV criticism.

Siegen's Master's degree program in Advanced Literary Studies qualifies for higher-ranking tasks in professions where high literature, culture and media-scientific competences are required: for example, in the media (newspapers, radio, TV), in publishing houses, publicity work and communication in cultural institutions (e.g. in cultural offices), in companies and in politics, in scientific facilities or in adult education.

 

Study structure

In the major-minor combination Advanced Literary Studies: Literature, Culture and Media can be combined with the following minor subjects::

• History
• Language and Linguistics: German, English and Romance Languages
• Media Culture
• Philosophy
• Social Sciences
• Theatre Pedagogy

 

Admission requirements

1) Completed Bachelor's degree program in literary studies
or
2) Completed other Bachelor's degree program with literary, culture or media studies shares. In this case, applicants must prove 27 credit points in the above-mentioned areas. With at least 18 credit points, the missing prior knowledge can be made up as specified by the subject examination board.

Important information

Languages

Very good knowledge in the chosen linguistic focus. Proof of language skills on level C1 or equivalent; recognition of equivalent results – e.g. average grade "good" (2.3) in the last language module of a preceding BA degree program – is possible and must be provided with the application.

Internship

Students complete either a minimum eight-week internship or a module from the Studium Generale (interfaculty lectures on general subjects).

Examination regulations/degree plan/module manuals/internship rules

Examination regulations (POs) specify the basic structures of a degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to be studied). Students are automatically subject to the current version of their PO when they matriculate for their first subject-related semester. This means that even if the PO changes during their studies, the original version according to which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the PO does not expire).
The respective degree plan is the recommended example progress of the studies in individual subjects and is part of a PO.
Supplementary provisions and details for any module to be studied can be found in the module manually (e.g. requirements for taking a written test or content-related information on the modules/events, ...).
The internship rules define the conditions under which the required or optional internships must be completed.

We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that you know which modules are intended for the start of your studies.
