The degree program

Since winter semester 2016/17, the University Siegen has been teaching the subject of art history as a major in the bachelor's degree program. The research-oriented and practice-related degree program qualifies for a further master's degree program or to start working in a profession. It offers many options for combination with outer subjects of the humanities and social sciences.
Art history – it may sound old-fashioned, but it is not. This subject has long ceased to be all about the "Old Masters". Today, art history is a part of an interdisciplinary image science that considers the relevance of visual aspects in our world. The world of images of the media therefore is part of the subject's objectives as well as popular culture and the variations of international contemporary art.
Studies of art history at the University Siegen has the target of linking the traditional contents of the subject with the current perspectives in a profitable manner. It is to each knowledge of the eras, types and styles of Western art across their entire bandwidth and to instruct in independent analysis of aesthetic phenomena. Basic competences in the area of visuality and image history are taught to permit argumentative and critical statements on general imaging and image-artistic issues of the past and present. The art historical basic education covers the Period from the Middle Ages and Modern Era to Modernity and the Present. A supplementary module reinforces knowledge in art theory and methodology, while the module of "Art in context" enables students to get to know pieces of art on site in the original. The close cooperation with the Siegen Museum for contemporary art, which enjoys an outstanding reputation in presenting 20th and 21st century art, should be empathised specifically here. A module on art didactic permits further specialization of museum and exhibition-didactic practical issues.

Study organization

Examination regulations/degree plan/module manuals/internship rules

Examination regulations (POs) specify the basic structures of a degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to be studied). Students are automatically subject to the current version of their PO when they matriculate for their first subject-related semester. This means that even if the PO changes during their studies, the original version according to which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the PO does not expire).
The respective degree plan is the recommended example progress of the studies in individual subjects and is part of a PO.
Supplementary provisions and details for any module to be studied can be found in the module manually (e.g. requirements for taking a written test or content-related information on the modules/events, ...).
The internship rules define the conditions under which the required or optional internships must be completed.

We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that you know which modules are intended for the start of your studies.
