Hyeongjoo Kim – Georg Bollenbeck Fellow 2023

Professor Dr. Hyeongjoo Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1982. He received his master's degree in philosophy from Chung-Ang University in Seoul in 2009. In 2016, he received his Doctorate in philosophy from Siegen University with a dissertation on a topic of Kant’s philosophy. Subsequently, he taught Kantian philosophy at Chung-Ang University and Seoul National University of Education. In 2018, he was appointed a tenure-track professor at Chung-Ang University's Artificial Intelligence and Humanities Unit, and was then promoted to associate professor in 2021.

His research interests are divided into two main areas: German idealism, including Kantian philosophy, and the philosophy of artificial intelligence. In this regard, he has authored 30 papers and authored or edited five books. His major achievements include the following:

  • Kant and Artificial Intelligence (De Gruyter, 2022)
  • Unexplanable explanable AI (Synthetica Philosophica, 2022)
  • Kants kritische Psychologie als Aufklarung (Zeitschrift für philosophische Forschung, 2020)
  • Groundwork of Artificial Intelligence Humanities (Jahr – European Journal of Bioethics, 2020)
  • Was heißt "Ich denke ist ein empirischer Satz"? (Kant-Studien, 2019)

He was invited to give a keynote lecture at the 9th Siegener Kant Tagung in 2021. He participated in the following research projects:

  • "Selbstbewusste KI", funded by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung in Deutschland  
  • "Critique of Artificial Reason", funded by National Research Foundation of Korea
  • "Artificial Intelligence Humanities", funded by National Research Foundation of Korea
  • Translation in Korean: "Kants Briefwechsel", funded by National Research Foundation of Korea
  • "Den Sachunterricht vernetzen – Perspektiven öffnen", funded by MIWF – NRW in Deutschland
