MAX – Mentor Summer Semester 2020
In 2017 I spend one semester abroad in the UK. Therefore, I can truly relate to how difficult it can be to find your way around a new university and a new system. During my semester abroad, I would have been very thankful to have a fellow student to whom I could turn to with all my questions, as I did not want to address all the small questions directly to a faculty member. Besides, I'm always happy to be able to meet people from other countries and cultures. That's why I was very pleased when I was assigned my mentee. Unfortunately, the pandemic did not make it possible for us to meet in person. We texted a little bit via Whatsapp and we got to know each other a little. Since my mentee was already quite familiar with the university and had quickly made friends, we didn't communicate too much. But he knew that he could always text me and get back to me with questions. At the end of the lecture period, I helped him with the enrolment for the examination credits.
Besides the contact with the mentee, I really enjoyed one particular online meeting with other mentors and international students. At this meeting, we talked about cultural differences, stereotypes and different lifestyles. It was very interesting to hear about the different point of views and what the students from different cultural backgrounds thought about the “German lifestyle”. I will register for the next semester as well and I hope there will be more opportunities to meet in person and get to know more people from around the globe.
