Productive exchange and new ideas for ATHENA European University

From 3 to 5 October, representatives of ATHENA European University and its associated partners met at Instituto Politécnico in Porto for the Management and Rector's Meeting.

The three-day event kicked off with the handover of the ATHENA presidency. Prof. Nikolaos Katsarakis from Hellenic Mediterranean University handed over the annually changing presidency to the rector of Niccolò Cusano University, Prof. Fabio Fortuna, represented by Prof. Stefano Guarino.

More than 100 participants then worked on topics such as strategic orientation, financial planning, and IT infrastructure in the largest meeting of ATHENA partners to date. In cross-thematic workshops, a closer interlinking of the areas of research and industry as well as teaching and internationalisation was also initiated.

Supported by the insights and challenges from the different areas of work, the rectors and project managers of the partner universities discussed new ideas for the project extension, which will be applied for at the European Commission next January. They were again supported by an external consultant who is providing ATHENA with strategic advice for the extension application.

Another highlight of the project meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with RUFORUM (Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture), a network of over 140 universities in Africa. Already during the meeting, first ideas for joint projects were developed and representatives of ATHENA were invited to a large RUFORUM event in Harare, Zimbabwe, at the end of the year.

Following the meeting, a workshop with regional industry partners took place on 6 October. The programme included seminars on circular economy and sustainable logistics, a visit to a start-up incubator and tours of two companies from the construction and shoe industries. Two days before, the members of the ATHENA Industry Interface Committee (IIC) met for the first time in person. The IIC is a group of experts from different companies and organisations that advises ATHENA on issues related to cooperation with industry.

Besides a productive exchange, the meeting also offered the opportunity to get to know the different campuses of the Instituto Politécnico, numerous research laboratories, and last but not least the impressive river landscape of the Douro on a boat trip. The next ATHENA Management and Rectors' Meeting is scheduled for April 2023 at the Niccolò Cusano University in Rome.
