BIP: WEMP - Water resources, Energy resources, Mining resources, Pollution mitigation

BIP WEMPVenue: Orléans, France
Date: 9 January - 13 January 2023 (in person), early spring 2023 (online)
Credits: 3 ECTS
For master and PhD students in natural sciences and engineering

From 9 January to 13 January 2023, the University of Orléans offers the 3 ECTS BIP "WEMP - Water Resources, Energy Resources, Mining Resources, Pollution Mitigation" in the field of Digital Environmental Geosciences. Next to being suitable for students from geosciences, it may also be interesting for master and PhD students in natural sciences and engineering with a strong interest in applying numerical methods in real world systems concerning water resources, energy resources, mining resources and pollution mitigation.

The "WEMP" is one of ATHENA's hands-on Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP), combining physical mobility with a short period of online participation. BIP were recently introduced by the new Erasmus+ programme (2021-2027) as an alternative form of mobility.

The invitation letter can be found here.

Contents

It is a varied programme with an emphasis on hands-on teaching, provided by experienced researchers from the University of Orléans, the CNRS and the BRGM (the French geological survey), led by Prof. Christophe Tournassat.

"WEMP" stands for:

W: Water Resources
E: Energy Resources
M: Mining Resources
P: Pollution Mitigation

The kick-off meeting in Orléans introduces the basic principles of four simulation techniques widely used in environmental geosciences:

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Digital Rock Physics and Microfluidics (DRP & MF)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Reactive Transport Modeling (RTM)

The applications of these methods in real world systems will be presented by international experts from academia and industry. Students will choose two of these techniques for follow-up hands-on sessions, which will be complemented by group projects mentored online by recognised local experts.

The preliminary programme can be found here.

Calendar

  1. Fill in the application form until 4 November 2022 (no registration fees applicable for University of Siegen students)
  2. Receive the information on admission by 11 November 2022
  3. Apply for Erasmus+ funding through the International Office at University of Siegen, starting from 14 November 2022
  4. Come to Orléans from 9 January to 13 January 20233
  5. Participate in an online workshop in early spring 2023

Funding

BIP - The Erasmus+ programme introduces new Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP) as alternative mobility for students and staff. BIP combine short-term physical mobility with a virtual component and make Erasmus+ mobility more flexible.

Students will receive support for physical mobility: 70 Euro per day. Students with fewer opportunities and/or students using "green travel" may receive extra travel support.

The International Office of the University of Siegen provides further information and support to students for physical mobility. Please contact Susanne Engelmann, susanne.engelmann@zv.uni-siegen.de.
