The degree program

This degree program is targeted at foreign and German students with a first university degree, e.g. a Bachelor's degree.

The PhD program is meant to take two years and ends with the academic degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.).

Intensive courses in German for foreigners are offered in the lecture-free weeks before the course commences and in parallel to the studies of physics by the "International Student Affairs" department. Similar courses in English for Germans are offered by the Siegener Institut für Sprachen im Beruf (SISIB).

In the first year, the studies comprise required classes in the areas of experimental physics and theoretical physics, as well as required modules that may come from other areas, preferably from the natural-sciences/technical department.

The first term comprises an internship on modern research subjects.
The second year is a dedicated research phase that takes place in a research group at the department. The research phase is completed with a six months' master's thesis.

The research focuses are in the areas of astro particles & particle physics, solids physics, X-ray physics, nano optics and quantum optics.

 

Admission requirements

1) Qualified bachelor's degree from a university or a university of applied sciences

  • a) in the subject of physics
  • b) in a natural-sciences subject (Bachelor of Science)
  • c) as a Diplom-PhysikingenieurIn

2) A qualified degree equivalent to the Bachelor's degree according to item 1).

3) A Bachelor's degree in the subject of physics is deemed qualified if acquired at a university in the scope of application of the German Civil Code and completed at least with the grade satisfactory, or if equivalent to such a degree. Equivalence is determined by the examination board for the master's degree program physics.

4) Foreign students also either need to document that they have passed the German language exam for university access for foreign student applications (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer StudienbewerberInnen; DSH) or an equivalent according to the DSH examination regulations or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with at least 530 credits or an equivalent test.
The examination regulations relevant at the time shall apply.

Examination regulations (POs) specify the basic structures of a degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to be studied). Students are automatically subject to the current version of their PO when they matriculate for their first subject-related semester. This means that even if the PO changes during their studies, the original version according to which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the PO does not expire).
The respective degree plan is the recommended example progress of the studies in individual subjects and is part of a PO.
Supplementary provisions and details for any module to be studied can be found in the module manually (e.g. requirements for taking a written test or content-related information on the modules/events, ...).
The internship rules define the conditions under which the required or optional internships must be completed.

We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that you know which modules are intended for the start of your studies.
