Urbanism in North Rhine-Westphalia

 

The degree program

The Master's degree program in "Urbanism in North Rhine- Westphalia" is offered by the University of Siegen together with the universities of applied sciences of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Bochum, Dortmund and the TH Cologne for academics from the subject areas of architecture, landscape architecture and urban development who want to continue their qualification in the area of urban development and urban planning in a two-years' Master's degree program.

The degree program is based on the exemplary experiences in handling structural change in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The study focus is the development of future-capable solutions for urban conversion of the highly industrialised and densely settled state and its metropolitan and rural regions. Elements and principles, target ideas and instruments for this are taught in theory and practice.

With more than 20 teachers from the disciplines of urban development, urban and regional planning, urban sociology, architecture, landscape architecture, environment and traffic planning, the degree program offers a unique bundle of expert know-how and educational experience for intense training.

The degree program focuses on practical design modules in which you will be prepared for the broad range of current and future task areas.

The degree "Master of Science" usually entitles to entry in the urban developers' list, to pursue postgraduate studies at a European university and to enter the higher civil service.

Important information
Lectures, seminars and exercises usually take place all day on Thursdays and Fridays during the semester. The compact presence days are to enable you to maintain contact with practice in parallel with your studies. Two compact design weeks take place within one semester.

The central study location is the TH Cologne, where you will also be matriculated. This ensures that the students will have a fixed location with comprehensive equipment available throughout their studies.

The admission proceedings will take place at least once every year. A ranking for the waiting list is specified at the same time.

Admission requirements

1) Bachelor's degree qualifying for a profession or an equivalent diploma degree in the specializations of urban development, architecture or landscape architecture with an overall grade of 2.5 or better.

For foreign applicants:
2) At least German skills on level C1 of the European reference framework must be documented by a grade sheet or certificate in the application. Proof of participation is not sufficient. Enrolment is only possible when the German language test for university access (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang; DSH2) or an equivalent language test (e.g. TestDaf with 16 points, ZOP of the Goethe-Institute, language diploma of the conference of the ministers of culture, level 2) have been passed. The DSH can be taken at the TH Cologne as well in early September.

Examination regulations (POs) specify the basic structures of a degree program (e.g. admission requirements and contents to be studied). Students are automatically subject to the current version of their PO when they matriculate for their first subject-related semester. This means that even if the PO changes during their studies, the original version according to which they matriculated will remain valid (provided that the PO does not expire).
The respective degree plan is the recommended example progress of the studies in individual subjects and is part of a PO.
Supplementary provisions and details for any module to be studied can be found in the module manually (e.g. requirements for taking a written test or content-related information on the modules/events, ...).
The internship rules define the conditions under which the required or optional internships must be completed.

We recommend at least looking at the study schedule for your degree program before the lecture time starts, to ensure that you know which modules are intended for the start of your studies.
