Dutch

Dutch, the language of the "Lage Landen" of the lower countries was originally called Dietsch, Duytsch ( cfr. E dutch). This means " language of the people" in contrast to Latin, which was then used as the language of the upper class and in official written usage. It was not until 1482 that the term Dutch appeared. The language was influenced by Flemish, Brabant and dialects from Holland, depending on which provinces were politically, economically and culturally important at the time.

In the Dutch Golden Age (16th century), when many scholars and writers from Flanders and the southern provinces fled to the province of Holland because of the Spanish occupation, the Dutch language acquired its uniform characteristics.

The Dutch language has a lot of similarity with German and yet it is still different.

Sometimes it requires some mouth and lip acrobatics to pronounce some sound combinations like "ieuw", "eeuw" , "ui" and " eu" but because of that it sounds cheerful and refreshing! Dutch is fascinating because of the bright vowels and intonation and the use of numerous diminutives makes the language very lively.

Dutch is associated with " het platteland", the endless sky, the low-hanging clouds, the wind and cycling.

Why do people always say Holland when they mean the Netherlands? Why is "oranje" the color and what connects Siegen with "de Oranjers" en "Rubens"?

Curious? Then visit the course!
