Why study mathematics?

Mathematics is one of the oldest sciences

Mathematics emerged over 4000 years ago when Babylonians started doing calculations. Over 2000 years ago, the Greeks systematically studied the structure of numbers and geometry. Some of the questions they raised could only be answered in the last 200 years. Even today, especially in the field of number theory, there are very old conjectures which are easy to formulate and appear very plausible, but which have not yet been proven.

Mathematics is modern!

Many areas of mathematics developed in the past are proving to be of crucial importance for current developments in the natural sciences, computer science, engineering and finance. Conversely, new problems arise from questions in these fields, sometimes even leading to the formation of new branches of mathematics.

Mathematics is useful!

Mathematical models are, for example, developed and used in optimisation and route planning, the simulation of a large variety of processes, and risk management in finance. In these applications, the ability to solve problems in a structured way, which is acquired while studying mathematics, is in high demand. Since the number of students in mathematics is traditionally low, career prospects after graduation remain good. And it has been shown that mathematicians can replace graduates from other fields of study in many areas.

Mathematics is exciting!

While mathematics often is not regarded as a natural science in a strict sense, without it natural sciences and technology could not exist. For the individual, the study of mathematics is a permanent alternation between the challenges posed by new problems and the satisfaction of having found a way to solve them.

Why study mathematics in Siegen?

Study situation

The Mathematics Department at the University of Siegen is comparatively small. This brings many advantages:

  • individual support already at the beginning of the study programme, e.g. also by students of higher semesters,
  • easy access to lecturers,
  • no overcrowded courses or waiting times for seminar places,
  • a friendly atmosphere,
  • easy access to literature and computer workstations,
  • possibilities to already contribute to research projects during the studies,
  • links to practical applications via cooperations with financial institutions with the participation of students.

In Siegen, inexpensive accommodation is available both in the form of student residences and with private landlords. Travel with regional buses and trains in North Rhine-Westphalia is included in the semester ticket. Many cultural activities are offered, including theatres, concerts, cinemas, cabaret, etc.

Campus & surroundings

The Mathematics Department and the Physics Department are located on an idyllic campus, from which the city centre can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. Most of the mathematics and physics lectures take place here.

Surroundings

The city of Siegen (population around 110,000) is located in southern North Rhine-Westphalia, in a densely wooded low mountain landscape between the Westerwald and the Sauerland. Lakes and reservoirs invite visitors to enjoy water sports and cycling in summer, while the mountains of the Rothaargebirge to the north-east, with heights of over
800 metres, offer good winter sports opportunities.

Siegen thus offers ideal conditions for living and studying near the countryside without having to forego the cultural offerings of larger cities.

Career Opportunities

In this section, possible fields of activity for mathematicians in business and industry will be discussed. A mathematician is characterised not only by specialist knowledge but also by a variety of skills acquired during his or her studies, namely the ability to think abstractly, logically, and to comprehend and structure complex issues.

Possible tasks for mathematicians in business and industry include:

  • preparation of risk forecasts in the field of insurance (health, life, reinsurance),

  • analysis of price developments of foreign exchange, stocks and warrants in the field of finance,

  • improvement of coding techniques (e.g. in the area of cashless payment transactions (online banking) and information technology), i.e. digital coding of information for data transmission (telephone, internet, music and picture) with adequate error correction,

  • optimisation of timetables for trains, buses, flights as well as route plans e.g. of waste collection or social services,

  • development of mathematical models simulating e.g. crash tests for cars, steel production in a continuous casting plant or the movement of a space vehicle,

  • converting information obtained through diagnostic procedures (X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging) into images that can be evaluated by medical professionals,
  • processing and evaluating data collected, for example, at insurance companies or banks.

How do I study mathematics at the University of Siegen? Application Procedures

Master of Science (English) - International Graduate Programc  / International Master Mathematics

The admission requirements are:

1) Bachelor's degree in mathematics or at least an equivalent degree completed at a university. The program must provide competencies from the mathematical field of at least 81 LP, of which the following areas must be covered to the minimum extent indicated:

- Analysis I-III (27 LP)

- Linear Algebra I (9 LP)

- Numerics I / Numerical Analysis (9 LP)

- Stochastics I / Probability Theory (9 LP)

The achievements must be comparable to those of the Bachelor's program in Mathematics at the University of Siegen.

If the afore mentioned minimum level cannot be demonstrated, admission to the Master's program is dependent on additional study and examination achievements from the Bachelor's program.

A prerequisite for admission is also proof of knowledge of the English language at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
