Summer School ROMA 23: la ricerca della bellezza

Anche in agosto 2023 l'università di Siegen, in cooperazione con l'università di Düsseldorf, ha organizzato la quarta Summer School di lingua e cultura italiana per i livelli A1 e B1, nata dall'intuizione del nostro docente di italiano Dr. Carmelo Alessio Meli di voler restituire ai partecipanti un’immagine realistica e appassionante dell'Italia.

"Cultura autentica" è infatti il motto di questa straordinaria esperienza, che ogni anno permette ai nostri studenti di gustare in prima persona la ricchezza, la varietà e il coinvolgimento dell’immenso patrimonio culturale italiano. Studiare la lingua italiana direttamente a Roma è infatti un’opportunità imperdibile per concretizzare le competenze linguistiche, in modo da renderle fortemente personali. L'esperienza ha mostrato che questa è l'unica strategia per uscire da una didattica astratta e per garantire ai nostri partecipanti una comunicazione effettiva e un collegamento della lingua con il modo di vivere italiano.

La Summer School 2023 ha rappresentato anche un elemento di ulteriore internazionalizzazione a vantaggio delle due università coinvolte. Infatti, le lezioni si sono tenute in cooperazione con l'Università Pontificia Salesiana, un centro istituzionale di indiscusso prestigio accademico a Roma, che ha concesso l'uso dei suoi spazi. Gli studenti hanno quindi potuto fare esperienza diretta della vita in un Campus Universitario italiano, con tutte le piccole abitudini tipiche ivi connesse.

In questo luogo, ogni giorno il corso ha impegnato gli studenti in una vera e propria avventura alla scoperta della comunicazione in italiano. Insieme al rigore grammaticale e alle strutture morfosintattiche, gli studenti hanno potuto esercitare effettivamente i modi comunicativi italiani, secondo il principio che vede la grammatica costantemente a servizio delle quotidiane sfumature di vita.

Per rafforzare la sintesi indissolubile di lingua, vita e cultura, la Summer School ha convintamente proposto delle esperienze culturali, fondamentali per toccare i partecipanti nel profondo della loro sensibilità. Gli obiettivi di questi momenti sono stati essenzialmente due:

(1) Da un lato, introdurre i ragazzi alle meraviglie e alla ingente eredità culturale della città di Roma. Questo mediante la visita dei Musei Capitolini, delle passeggiate nella Roma barocca e infine grazie allo studio approfondito della Roma contemporanea, visitando il quartiere Eur.

(2) Da un secondo punto di vista, le escursioni culturali hanno voluto ampliare gli orizzonti dei nostri ragazzi offrendo loro uno sguardo verso un elemento imprescindibile per chiunque voglia avere una introduzione alla cultura italiana. Parliamo della fusione con altre culture, della permeabilità dell'Italia. Questo è stato realizzato mettendoci in marcia verso il luogo che forse più di tutti simboleggia il dialogo, l'incontro e la comunicazione con altre culture: la Costiera Amalfitana e le tradizioni dell'Italia del sud. Una fusione meravigliosa di elementi mediterranei, arabi, barocchi e tipicamente marinari, fanno della Costiera Amalfitana un luogo non soltanto impressionante dal punto di vista naturalistico, ma di un interesse culturale estremo. I partecipanti della Summer School hanno quindi avuto modo di far parte di questo luogo coinvolgente e unico al mondo, sperimentando sulla loro pelle cosa significa la cultura dell’incontro, della fusione e della contaminazione.

Un’ultima parola va spesa riguardo al fattore emotivo connesso con la Summer School. Dopo questi quattro anni, è evidente che studiare a Roma, condividendo tempo, amicizie, difficoltà, cultura e modi di vivere italiani, non è un semplice arricchimento di curriculum. Ciò lo si vede negli occhi dei giovani studenti: sguardi pieni di bellezza, di nuove prospettive e di spensieratezza. Il cibo italiano, la rilassatezza nel vivere, la flessibilità, il sole caldo che invita a dimenticare i problemi non sono soltanto stereotipi: diventano carne, diventano persone, diventano voci concrete. Insomma, che dire? Un grande, enorme grazie a tutte le persone che hanno permesso la realizzazione di questa esperienza e...ci vediamo presto a Roma!

In August 2023, the University of Siegen, in collaboration with the University of Düsseldorf, has organized the fourth Summer School for Italian Language and Culture at levels A1 and B1 again.

This extraordinary experience is themed "Authentic Culture". Each year it offers our students the opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of Italy's vast cultural heritage first-hand. Involvement in everyday Roman life, learning and practicing the Italian language directly on the spot, provides an indispensable opportunity to translate language skills into concrete abilities and to immediately anchor what has been learned. Experience has shown that this is the only strategy to step out of abstract teaching and allow the participants to communicate authentically and to create a realistic symbiosis between language and lifestyle.

The Summer School represents an instrument of internationalization for the benefit of the two universities involved. Moreover, the collaboration with the Pontifical Salesiana University means being able to be part of an academically prestigious institutional center in Rome. The use of the premises made available by the Salesiana University allows students to gain an insight into the customs of Italian campus life.

The goals of this project were twofold: on the one hand, to introduce the participants to the wonders and immense cultural heritage of the city of Rome. This was achieved through visits to the Capitoline Museums, as well as walks through Baroque Rome and in-depth studies of modern Rome, including a visit to the contemporary neighborhood of Eur.

On the other hand, the cultural excursions should broaden the horizons of our students by giving a glimpse of an indispensable element: The international fusion of cultures and the permeability of Italy. In this regard, the excursion to the Amalfi Coast plays a central role. Students enjoy using the weekend after the official field trip there to experience the diversity of Italy's culture and history in this unique and captivating place firsthand. The wonderful fusion of Mediterranean, Arabian, Baroque and typical maritime elements makes the Amalfi Coast not only impressive from a scenic perspective, but also shows the multicultural component.

Thus, based on the idea that grammar serves the everyday subtleties of life, participants can practice the communicative nuances of the language, in addition to grammatical precision and morphosyntactic structures. The confrontation with different dialects, habits, and traditions represents a challenge, but also an intensification of this unique experience

A last and special word must be said about the emotional aspect related to the Summer School.

Next year will be the fifth anniversary of the Summer School in Rome, led by our Italian lecturer Dr. Carmelo Alessio Meli. Not only has he all this possible, but also accompanies all participants beyond his working hours with advice and support. His dedication to the project and his sense of duty towards the students is something unique and helps the participants overcome their fears and fall in love with life in this overwhelming and open big city. The numerous activities and evenings that Mr. Meli organizes outside of his working hours create an emotional component for the participants and a very human, personal level, which helps with losing the inhibitions in using the language and meeting the very open and mostly friendly Romans receptively as well. Multicultural friendships, new perspectives for the future and for life, also in Italy, as well as a different attitude towards life are formed.

After these four years, it is obvious that studying in Rome is not a mere curriculum enrichment. Rather, the happy looks of the young students reflect their lightheartedness, flexibility, and joy in the Italian way of life, which they take back to Germany with them, if they want to return. The serenity of the Italians, the culinary offer, the warm sun, the beach bathing after the stressful everyday life invite them to forget all their problems. Prejudices are replaced by an authentic image of Italy. They become people, concrete voices.
