At Glasgow Caledonian University, around 17,000 students from all over the world are able to attend undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA programmes. The GCU Vision is “to be a successful international university delivering access and excellence, with a strong commitment to the common good” (GCU Global: International Strategy 2012-15). It is guided by the following principles: Equality of opportunity; good citizenship; partnership; good governance; and accessibility and approachability.

In the CoDec-Project, the Department of Social Sciences, Media and Journalism (History & Politics Subject Group) will be the partner. Dr. S. Karly Kehoe brings in her expertise in the research and teaching agenda of the History section of the History and Politics subject group. Her work considers identity, religion and citizenship in the British World and for this project, she plans to consider Scotland’s role in the Atlantic Slave Trade. She is currently running one project on this theme which links with the secondary school curriculum; a second project on this theme began on 15 February 2012.

So far, Dr. Kehoe has been a project leader in the “Looking Back to Move Forward: Slavery and the Highlands” public engagement project. In this, she worked with local stakeholders and Higher History pupils at Inverness Royal Academy to develop a public exhibition on the region’s links with the slave trade.

She is also a Steering Committee Member, The Royal Society of Edinburgh’s RSE@ Lochaber Project. She was invited to join this committee in 2011 and has worked with colleagues from a range of disciplines to develop a public engagement programme for the 2012-13 academic year.
